Yeah, scabs can be problematic for everyone. And line crossing is rough, like really rough.

Never had to deal with scabs, but I have had to deal with line crossers.

They can be good for the shareholder. I prefer to think of them as bandaids rather than scabs.

Depends, our last strike the company leaned heavily on third party co tractors to perform the work. They were able to keep operations going, but I spent like my next two weeks doing repairs on work done during the strike.

I don't know if they simply had incompetent contractors, or they just didn't care because they knew they'd be gone when the normal workforce returned. But I imagine that cost the company damn well near what it would have if they'd just closed operations for the strike.

More likely Trump sends the national guard to quell the revolt and force the workers back at severely reduced pay.

We're not going to control the pandemic!

It is a slaughter and not just a political dispute.

That's largely what made GM and Chrysler seek bailouts in 2008.

Those companies cost more for customers to buy a car from, but didn't have the legacy costs of pensions.

There are some other issues. Current locations along the great lakes region are losing the edge they had for manufacturing.

The great lakes were great when our primary export target was Europe. With Asia as a focus shipping out of the great lakes is no longer efficient. One that is really long route to the Panama Canal. Two ships are limited to the Saint Lawrence seaway Lock size. 3. The cost to use the Saint Lawrence Locks is fairly expensive especially compared to the gulf of Mexico being free (once out of harbor).

Or not, because other nationalities are not magically better at automotive manufacturing.
It is not built into the national DNA or something. And we are good enough at it.

Who entirely miss the point. The most successful countries for workers like the Nordics use a Tripura cooperative model. The government, employers and workers all work together for the better of all, because all rely on each other.

Where any country that has used a IWW style confrontation model has massive problems.

Well it is true that many foreign companies actually make their vehicles here, especially larger SUVs and pick ups.

Solidarity with all workers agitating against the Capitalist system o/

This, the teamsters, and Kaiser Permanente's 80,000-strong strike set to happen next month are exactly what we need right now. The more that strike and stand up to the systemic oppression and failings of Capitalism, the better; hopefully these movements will inspire more workers to stand up.

Oh it probably is. But one can always hope. Maybe they'll pull a Washington Redskins and hire a bunch of scabs but try to cover it up.

You do realize that the striking workers can block the scabs from working right?

Kent State was a major propaganda victory for those against the Vietnam war. Using the National Guard would have the same effect. The unions would practically run toward the left.

It will not though. Trump is more likely to side with the UAW regarding the factory closures instead of GM.

In fact Trump has harshly criticized GM over factory closures, and has in fact been against the corporations on this issue.

Trump has many problems, but he is not a shill for neoliberal outsourcing.

Now why he is doing so is political, blue collar workers are his base.

Still he is not always on the side of the corporations at all, especially on trade.

That becomes interesting, he needs their votes, not the union leadership, republicans will never get that, but the rank and file. Michigan, Ohio, Indiana... that math is not beyond a New York real estate developer.
