Why fear them though? They could be nice people, you know.

Everybody expects ET and they could end up being Klingons.

We throw Samurais and Vikings at them and the Klingons will respect us.

all of the planets we discover are large, because our way of finding them isn't really able to detect anything smaller.
(when we become able to detect planets smaller then our own earth, or even saturn, around distant suns, THAT will be REAL news)
what is reassuring is that nearly every star is a sun which has them. any in their sun's 'goldy locks' zone might have life as we 'know' it,
and of course, 'life' as we don't 'know' it, could be almost anywhere. (but wouldn't likely find us tasty nor us it)

water of course, in its liquid phase, is key to that 'life as we know it'. so this is encouraging.

we still have no way ourselves, to travel much beyond our own solar system within the natural span of our individual lives.
there are several possible work arounds to this.

but just knowing they're there, is good for a smile on my face too.

(there are twenty solar systems within twenty years at the speed of light.
only problem is, we've yet to accellerate anything larger then an atomic nucleus even a tenth of that.)

truth isn't what i say. isn't what you say. isn't what anybody says. truth is what is there, when no one is saying anything.

Of course the key question is whether we lather those large roaming pancakes with chocolate sauce or maple syrup.

"Life friendly" is a bit of an exaggeration, what with the planet being large, high in oxygen, tidally locked, and most likely constantly bathed in solar flares.

Life "friendly" feels too strong a word. Life "acquaintance"? Life "knows but wouldn't let into their house"?

You can not physically break c without going massless. Astronauts need mass.

Well, theoretically you could warp spacetime but that's like real hard unless you have a lot of mass.

I suggest sending Christians, they have mass quite often.

So, considering the grand number of threads that are utterly depressing, combative, or just plain shitstorms, I wanted to celebrate something big in science that just went by. A planet, tens of times larger than earth has been found to have water on it. (No, we didn’t go, it’s through water vapor absorbing light. The article has more info on how that works.) That’s noteworthy, but not overtly so-other planets have been found to have water before. Thing is, this one is in the Goldilocks Zone of its respective star, making it the most likely candidate for life that we know of.

Sadly, we can’t exactly check-it’s 111 light years away. But SPACE!

So, NSG, do you think there might be life on this planet? Would it be worth it to go? Not just for extraterrestrial life, but also as a secondary planet for us? And if there was life, what would happen?

No, it is not worth going, as even if we can travel at the speed of light (which we can't), it would take 111 light years to get there. If it is larger than the Earth, then it is going to have more gravity, which could prevent humans from living there.

Something about dinner, tasty prey, yum-yum.

Probably an error in the translation software.
