So the intarwebs have been all of a flutter over Playstation joypads, when someone dared to ask the seemingly innocent question of whether you call the lower button X or Cross?

I've never called that button "cross," but I can see where they're coming from. Cross-country is abbreviated with an "x," and Railroad Crossings are abbreviated "RxR"

For the OP, I would say context-dependent. I will say "x" if it is a letter, but if it is used for "WRONG!", then I will say "cross".

I guess it makes sense to call it cross when they're all symbols. OTOH, on controllers where the buttons are letters, the same symbol should be considered to be X.

This is a problem unique to Playstation because..

The scrap is a rare event in the world of video games as console manufacturers usually name buttons after numbers, unambiguous letters of the alphabet or colours. The groundbreaking Nintendo Entertainment System pad, for example, went with A, B, while the SNES added X and Y (a configuration also used by Sega and Microsoft), and in this context, it’s clear that “X” is X.

The only other major console controller to utilise symbols was the disastrous Apple Bandai Pippen, which featured raised dots on its four main buttons as well as a sequence of buttons on the front of the pad, which in turn featured three shapes: “square”, “circle” and “diamond”. There was little controversy over what to call any of these buttons, however, because a), Apple avoided the contentious “X” symbol and b), no one bought an Apple Bandai Pippin.

Anyway, X will always be pronounced X, as in X-ray.

I’ve been calling it the “X” button for over 20 years since the PS1 days, so “X” it shall remain.

The D-pad is closer to a "cross" than the "X" button which is...well...an X

It's X. I don't give a shit what some dude from Sony says, 99.9999% of players call it x, so it's fucking x. Language is defined by consensus, people don't own words, one person doesn't get to say "AKSHUALLY..." regardless of their position.
