Business and Economics Discussion Thread

Surprised we haven’t had one yet. This is a thread to discuss business and economics news, companies, stocks, etc. As of this thread’s creation, another global recession is supposedly going to happen, many companies are starting to go down like Tesla, Ulta, and more, and the trade war continues to rage between the US and its allies vs. the “Chinese Bloc.” Cryptocurrencies are showing some promises of rising up again, most notably Litecoin. Many countries are fast on the rise economically, notably in Eastern Europe and English Africa, and talks of an African economic union are going around. Please don’t come here just to talk about capitalism or how corrupt the system is or whatever, there are other threads to do that.

An African Economic Union? Is this related to the East African Union thing?

I should probably add in the OP that this isn’t a place to rant about capitalism but to discuss economic news

Kowani wrote:An African Economic Union? Is this related to the East African Union thing?

No, it’s the AU, basically Africa’s version of the EU which supposedly has plans on adopting a continental currency like the Euro

More specifically the planned Free Trade Agreement

Ehhh, its kinda hard for a lot people to discuss economic news without looking at some of the follies of capitalism.... This thread should honestly be titled Market Watch Thread as that seems to be the intent

I know what the AU is. I just didn’t think it had any power.

That continental currency is gonna be even harder to implement than the Euro...

The stock market is not and never will be an accurate predictor of the strength or weakness of the economy

Just a question for Europeans here, is it wise to invest in Europe based startups that may or may not come into conflict with Article 13 once it is fully implemented, if we’re going with the assumption that it is?

Exactly, many people make that mistake, however, it does reflect the health of the economy to some extent. It’s really odd considering many times NASDAQ and Dow show completely opposite results, on particular days while their overall trend seems to always align.

The stock market is operated on a basis of mass hysteria in my opinion which always leads to skewed results... The president can do so much as say a naughty word and the market could collapse

Really depends, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

The current President dropped the Dow 600 points with a tweet.

I know, but the economic collapse wouldn’t happen with a “naughty word” as mentioned. Anything related to politics can affect stocks, but never to the extent of collapse

Its a bit of a hyperbole but sell offs occur more often than not due to world events more so than anything else.... and people always buy into what they think will be the next big thing which causes over inflated prices that lead to yet another sell off due to company failure or worse... or at least thats the way I see it... The stock market is a strange beast but you cant deny the role of mass hysteria

You definitely can’t, but the stock market is much better than what it was even a decade ago on the topic of mass hysteria. If it truly was based on mass hysteria, all of Elon Musk’s enterprises would be dead by now
