Also before you mention the soldiers spend money remember most soldiers live on base so no rent or property tax to the local economy, also if the buy at the PX it means to sales tax for the local state either.

Military bases only really help the dive bar and tattoo parlor economy. Neither of which are the basis of Florida, Texas, and California's economy.

I actually have. Army sent my company to straighten some marines up. For the record army signal corpsmen are worth 3 marines apiece.

Still there, they make sure the city has a couple new unneeded skyscrapers every once in a while. Sure there's vacant ones but you can build a whole new one, that's fine.

According to what I seem to hear it will be considered a Tropical Storm for Miami Dade and Broward County, but I don't know what to think? What are the wind rates and storm categories for a Tropical Storm and a major Hurricane storm?

I think the wind for a tropical storm can hit something like 75MPH (EDIT: Checked; tropical storm force winds = 39-73 MPH), but having been in a couple of them, the description of "just a giant rainstorm" is quite accurate. A real tropical storm is TORRENTS of rain, belted down by a decent wind. I usually think they're fun. I just love the energy of a giant storm, danger be damned. The same goes for most actual hurricanes, though, so my opinion may be a bit out of the norm. LOL

That said, "tropical storm force winds" coming from a hurricane do NOT work quite like an actual tropical storm going over your head. Instead of a fairly steady, forceful rain, this situation typically causes blasts of super-powered rain and wind to come in lash-like waves as each arm of the 'cane passes over.

Even so, Dorian's snail-like speed can make a "giant rainstorm" into a huge flood, and I predict that to be the far bigger problem - not just because of the water itself, but because of what that water does to the structure of the ground. Big oaks are unlikely to snap, but I've seen many pictures of them having simply fallen over after previous storms. I'm hoping this hurricane speeds up so we don't get totally inundated as well as blown at.

I’d say that the Keys are going to be smashed like the Bahamas tomorrow or Dorian will barely miss the Keys and stay right along the coast. I’m no meteorologist but the lull of movement caused by the lack of tension in the atmosphere is a cause for major concern in those areas.

Now that I think about it... yeah that was wrong. It’s likely gonna miss the Keys.

So apparently trump tried to stand by his claim that Alabama was in danger by doctoring a fake path that showed dorian originally crossing Florida and striking Alabama

If anyone is ready for a sad story, I got one

There was this old dude down in the Bahamas apparently and him and his wife were riding out the storm when the house caved in around them. They grabbed a hold of the counter top to stay afloat and he managed to get on top of it but his wife couldn't and after a period of time, she began succumbing to hypothermia before limply sinking beneath the waves. I cannot imagine having someone you love die in such a way before your eyes. This poor guy is gonna have a hard if not impossible time getting over what happened and it may scar him for the rest of his life. The death toll is only gonna rise too so there's that

For a storm as violent and destructive, dorian seems like a pretty pathetic and non threatening name. Imagine if we named it "hurricane death" instead

I seriously doubt the "non-threatening" names are the issue. George Carlin even joked that "Wayne LaPierre" sounds like too "fruity" a name for a gun nut. It's almost as if there's no such thing as what a non-threatening name sounds like; as if it's purely subjective.

Those who refuse to evacuate often claim they're sticking around to shoot at looters. I think it's barbaric and should be left in the hands of professionals, but I don't see any evidence that they're really motivated by how non-threatening the name is.
