The government doesn't have the resources to spy on everyone all the time, so tends to focus on specific "high risks" that they detect through one way or another.

Google collects your data based on your metadata, making assumptions based on your search data for targeted advertising.

And you technically agree to this arrangement, since (iirc) you accept the terms and conditions of Google by using Google.

Hence why I've stopped using Google, but I think companies are still spying on me.

I use the privacy badger plugin. It blocks trackers like google analytics and facebook trackers, etc. And next to that, also an ad block.

I enjoy playing analytical roulette. Google can't seem to work out where I'm from or what I am so the ads I get on youtube have no bearing on targeted marketing. Currently google think's I'm Finnish and a 50+ year old male.

I don’t like being spied on, but the government is going to do it anyway and to be honest, I’d rather have the Internet. So although everything about me is known to some company, it’s tough for me to do anything satisfactory about it.

I was in Estonia for a few days, got Estonian ads for a month :)

It was a nice change from the Serbian ones the month before, time was running out.

I do get local ads but since my search history is so weird and varied (first I’ll be looking at the tallest building in Kansas City, then I’ll have searched up “how many korean war casualties” out of the blue) that it just doesn’t know what kinds to show me.

Sure they do, and have been doing so since the late 1990’s, and don’t think for a second the US is the only one doing it.

I think Google thought I was an elderly man. I kept getting ads for chairlifts, stroke recovery systems, and similar things.

Perhaps a lot of senior citizens live in your neighbourhood? Your residential area also tends to be of influence when it comes to receiving online ads.
