If you travel far enough back in time your language would be incomprehensible. If you wish to be a parachronic spoil-sport then you'd be limited to the 20th century and beyond.

Well, no. Spanish in the 19th Century is still comprehensible, although I would have to adapt quite a bit, due to my own local dialect not existing yet.

If we have the capability to time travel, would we get universal translators too? Because that would make experiencing the past a bit easier.

I've been thinking about that a lot, so I was curious.

Recover Aristotle’s lost dialogues

Aristotle didn't write dialogues, he wrote what we would now call journal papers or collected lectures. A lot of what we have now may have been his own lecture notes or notes taken by his students. This kind of problem happens when you don't have any autograph copies of an ancient author's works, or even copies of the copies of the autograph versions.

We could get you up to speed on versions of Spanish going back to Cervantes, at a minimum. I suppose if you studied hard enough, maybe even Old Spanish.

18th Century too. Actually, one would have a hard time (speaking for spanish only) going back to the time of the creation of Don Quixote. Before that I wouldn't understand. Don't think anyone without knowledge of the language spoken at the time would.

You have no idea how friggin hard it was to be forced to read Don Quixote in its original version in school.

I’ve read El Quijote in the original Spanish. It’s not impossible, although Don Quijote himself speaks in a dialect that was antiquated for the time, so it’s not the greatest benchmark.

Well, that’s because the Character of Don Quijote has a speech pattern chosen by Cervantes to be deliberately antiquated and badly done, to indicate that he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

But older than that is entirely impossible.

He was imbued with nothing. Cervantes purposely screwed up His dialogue in order to present his character better. At best, he was imbued with dementia.

I looked up the first chapter of the original text. It's understandable if you already understand the letters and their pronunciation. I guess 7th grade me was just too stupid in spanish xD

I correct my original post. 17th century spanish is doable, at least when written.

Quite true. It is more the unsolved nature of his killings. There are really no good clues, and the case aided in the birth of forensic sciences. Mostly it was on one of the first unsolved mysteries that came from the top of my head. It would be amazing to talk to people long dead by our time. There are so many people I would like to meet. Alfred Russell Wallace, Napoleon, Robert Oppenheimer, Helena Augusta, and a great etc..

Latin american spanish is quite archaic when compared to European spanish. I guess latinos would have it easier when speaking.
