If you travel far enough back in time your language would be incomprehensible. If you wish to be a parachronic spoil-sport then you'd be limited to the 20th century and beyond.

Well, no. Spanish in the 19th Century is still comprehensible, although I would have to adapt quite a bit, due to my own local dialect not existing yet.

Ah, my apologies. Those were intended to be separate. My mind is all over the place this... almost morning, I guess, since it's 2358 as of the time I write this?

We could get you up to speed on versions of Spanish going back to Cervantes, at a minimum. I suppose if you studied hard enough, maybe even Old Spanish.

18th Century too. Actually, one would have a hard time (speaking for spanish only) going back to the time of the creation of Don Quixote. Before that I wouldn't understand. Don't think anyone without knowledge of the language spoken at the time would.
You have no idea how friggin hard it was to be forced to read Don Quixote in its original version in school.

I’ve read El Quijote in the original Spanish. It’s not impossible, although Don Quijote himself speaks in a dialect that was antiquated for the time, so it’s not the greatest benchmark.

True, the Knight was imbued with the language of the Old Times. My point was, we could get you up to snuff before sending you back.

I looked up the first chapter of the original text. It's understandable if you already understand the letters and their pronunciation. I guess 7th grade me was just too stupid in spanish xD
I correct my original post. 17th century spanish is doable, at least when written.

The Wasatch wrote:Ameriganastan wrote:Why do people think Jack The Ripper was so interesting? He only killed like 5 people. American serial killers blow him away.
Quite true. It is more the unsolved nature of his killings. There are really no good clues, and the case aided in the birth of forensic sciences. Mostly it was on one of the first unsolved mysteries that came from the top of my head. It would be amazing to talk to people long dead by our time. There are so many people I would like to meet. Alfred Russell Wallace, Napoleon, Robert Oppenheimer, Helena Augusta, and a great etc..

That’s true. Pronunciation is…yeah, that’ll be a bit harder.
