I get the point of it. Paying people to clean them costs money. You don't want people freeloading off other people's washrooms, especially if someone walks into a restaurant, uses the washroom, and supposedly changes their mind about eating there once they see the menu.

But £1 is a tad exorbitant. Can't they just tax the restaurants near Piccadilly Station to make the food cost more instead, (assuming the point is to fleece tourists and/or reduce crowding) so that diabetic passengers don't feel like they're being disproportionately fleeced?

Paying to use public toilets tends to be the rule here rather than the exception. Only shops do not charge, but since their toilets are intended for customers only then you are still paying for it in a sense.

In a way, paying for what you're using (eg. the washroom) makes more sense than paying for what you never really wanted to use. (Eg. Any of the products or services at that shop.)

The sensors are based on movement. Imagine trying to shit while desperately trying not to move too much in order to avoid being publicly humiliated. Also, hostile architecture preventing homeless people from finding shelter is always shitty.
