Should parents be able to track their children?

Postby Greater vakolicci haven » Wed Aug 14, 2019 4:45 am

Happy Wednesday NSG!

So, before I post the link, a bit of context is in order as to why I found it in the first place. Part of my job involves testing out various parental control aps, and breaking them; then designing software to break them for end users (children.) In looking for a particular piece of software, I came across this nightmarish link:
https://qz.com/1482833/parents-are-putt ... nage-kids/

My question to you, nsg, is should this sort of thing (parents tracking their kids with ankle monitors) be permitted? Is it a vital reassureance for parents, or the most blatent invasion of a childs privacy possible?

As you can probably guess from why I found the link in the first place, I don't think it should be at all permitted. It destroys a childs rights, makes them feel as if their parents don't trust them and creates resentment down the line.

Your thoughts, NSG?

Wouldn't it be easier to implant the gps under their skin? That way no embarrassment.

Somewhat arbitrary, but up to the age of around 16 I'm okay with it as looking after children is primarily the role if a parent. Older than that and it'd be a bit creepy.

Under what circumstances would you consider it not creepy if the kid is under 16?

Only with the child's contractual consent, written without the parents in the same room and done every 6 months or so, and only with gps trackers. No audio or video.

I would consider getting a gps tracking app for a young child's phone/a watch, but only for safety, and because I believe in the Japanese way of letting your kids wander around town all they want (assuming it's not a bad place to live) with minimal supervision. Could be because that's how I was raised and I never got into trouble--granted, I was an extremely neurotic kid...so *I* was the parental supervision of the block.

After they're 13 or so I'd trust them enough to not run into ongoing traffic or get into a stranger's van.

A camera on their ankle wouldn't see much. It'd just give some good views of the different varieties of dogshit around the neighbourhood.

The camera needs to be mounted on their head. It should be as bulky and conspicuous as possible, with enough weight to give little Timmy trouble if he wants to run anywhere.

Many. Two from the top of my head - for parents worried about young kids being abducted, or when the child has a history of bunking off school.

Actually the ankle camera will be better. See Timmy squelching into some dogshit in glorious 4K resolution. Upload and monetize on YouTube. Profit.

The eye level camera stuff will be far more run of the mill.

If you are so scared of the outside world and/or don't trust your child, why having one in the first place? Will never understand this bullshit. Have a dog if you are so stressed about a kid.

Alright, I just read the top post and the title of the article linked. Those children should put the trackers on stray cats and dogs. The tracking of children should be illegal (by their parents at least).

Reading further down in the article is sickening. There should not be a market for this. No one should of thoguht about it with any seroiousness and it will have long-lasting effects on children's pschology if they feel like caged animals. They will begin to resent their parents. If they start to do that, it could be generalised to authority as a whole. This could increase crime rates and therefore prison populations. This is just one way it can get out of hand. There are many others. None of them have a happy childhood in them. (or adulthood when the child grows up). If police are called to bring the children home after a curfew, they should just take them to the station, destroy the GPS and punish the parents heavily. This is inexcusable!

Thanks for reading.

May we civilise the world with an iron fist.
