Oh, I have no faith in this country either really. I just have a strong dislike of America for current and historical reasons.

1776 was a long time ago (243 years ago), so it is kind of pointless to still have hatred over our not-so-recent revolution. Though admittedly, I've heard that some hatred went on for much longer. I find UK gun laws unsatisfactory. Whilst I agree with the level of vetting and checks, I think handguns and automatic weapons ought to be permitted too.

Why? What possible reasons could a civilian need for automatic weapons, let alone handguns?

All able bodied males, 17 to 45 are not fully civilians.
Under law are supposed to be ready to fight to defend their country. Plus self defense, sport and hunting. I agree fully automatic should generally be restricted but law abiding and mentally capable people should be able to arm themselves, within reason.

We've been in relative decline since even before 1918, because as larger countries like the United States, Germany and the Soviet Union caught up with us technologically our industrial base was simply too small to compete with them on equal terms. It has always been quantity, not quality, that we lack.
