The world almost always operate in a way that is almost the opposite of what moral propaganda claim. For example Mao killed more than Stalin who killed more than Hitler. That’s just my guess, which is subject to change. Also, it really depends on what the dictator is like. Are they imperialist? Nationalist? Trying to spread their ideology? Fascist, communist, or something else? Do they follow an extreme version of the Monroe Doctrine? Do they have their sets sight on the Pacific? Europe? Asia? Are they trying to get into space? There’s so many things that could change everything. It also depends on whether other countries follow suit and get their own dictator.

Basically MAWA (Make America White Again) fascists who's only real platform is fanatical anti-immigrationism that if criticised overseas will pull out the same victim card China uses on a regular basis that they have a right to exterminate any group of people they don't like.

Reminder, the scenario stated is not meant to have any basis whatsoever to the reality of US politics and is solely meant to ask "what if?". If responses can focus on taking the (most likely) completely nonsensical scenario seriously it would be appreciated.

Even in my darkest moments I don't believe the US military would go along with invading a friendly neighboring country, let alone nuking one. Leaving that out of the scenario, I have to believe that any serious attempt on the part of an authoritarian-minded executive to significantly curtail civil rights would be opposed, first in the courts, then in the legislature, and if all else fails by mass demonstrations a la Puerto Rico. The economic disruption would cripple the US economy and put Europe, China or some other nation or combination of nations in the US's place.

Nuking Mexico specifically would be like the US shooting itself in the foot. Since every other nation would immediately cut off trade until the rogue US gave up its nuclear arsenal, and since winter veggies, avocados, etc. from Mexico would have been nuked into oblivion, the nation would slowly starve. Except that before that and under UN authorization Russia would set off a huge EMP over the US, followed by surgical strikes against US nuke sites. Every nation with a clandestine service would send hit squads to the US to decapitate the rogue government. Chaos would ensue, the rogue government along with most state and local governments would collapse and the territory of the US would be put under a UN mandate and eventually be divided into districts administered by Canada, Mexico, the EU and Japan. After several decades Americans would be allowed a limited degree of self-government but, having enjoyed the benefits of universal health care, progressive social policies and common-sense gun control, many would opt for joining the protecting powers' nations.
