How Much do you Know about Religion?

Postby Forsher » Sat Jul 27, 2019 5:13 am

So, everyone likes quizzes right? Well, here's a quiz with 15 general knowledge questions about religion.

I know NSG can be pretty edgy but don't worry. Zoroastrianism is one of the multichoice options.

Of course, NSG also has to have discussions. I feel this would be easier if I read their report about the survey of Americans they did (oh, yeah, cool feature... compare yourself to the American public... spoiler alert: they're terrible at religion: although they did have to answer more questions than in the quiz) but I haven't. However, some general themes for discussion seem to be:

  • is it useful to know about the mythologies and practices of (major) religions and their denominations (e.g. Christianity, Islam)?
  • is it sensible to separate the three Abrahamic faiths into three religions?
  • would you, personally, rather be/have been raised in a religious or anti-religious household?

To that first question... I think it is useful to know that people who wear turbans probably aren't Muslims... incidentally Sikhs also tend to wear a bracelet known as a kara if you... at least, I've never met any. On the other hand, it's also useful know that Darth Vader is Luke's dad. Cultural literacy is obviously useful but, at the same time, it's a very vocational form of knowledge... more about not being confused than becoming enlightened.

To the second question... it seems silly to me. I mean, if you were reading a book and suddenly realised it featured the same characters, used the same canon and was written later than another book you'd assume it was either a sequel or a fanfic... you wouldn't start calling it a completely new thing, would you? If the fandoms of said books then also did similar things to each other you'd be even more convinced it was really all just the same Thing, right? Well, yeah, that's pretty much exactly what we're talking about. Incidentally, I much prefer Good Omens to Job.

To the third question... for context, my mother is very anti-religion and particularly Catholics. Three guesses for how she grew up. Aside from a slight tendency to treat religions as no different to Star Wars or Harry Potter, I feel like I have a much healthier relationship towards religion than either my mother or my uncritical cousin. By analogy, anti-religion is the way to go.

A note on the last question... as a would you rather game you cannot elect to grow up in a household that is merely non-religious. This would be like saying a valid response to "Would you rather murder your mother or your father?" is "I murder both". You're quite simply not following the rules.

So, what say ye, NSG? Are you better at religion than America?

Literally nearly or about half the poll is about Christianity. I got a 10/15.

I think the poll should have more about religion that aren’t often seen or discussed, such as Islam, Buddhism and Judaism.

Personally, I feel that it’s useful to learn about religion so you may relate better to your religious friend, and truly say you understand.

Got 12, my temporarily favorite number.
My answers to the three bullets:
*Ultimately I think learning about religions helps us understand why certain groups of people have a certain line of thinking and how it affects their lifestyles. Useful? Depends on one's situation or interest I guess.
*I think it's sensible to separate the Abrahamic religions.
*The household I grew up in is inconsistently religious. I think it's better if households just encouraged openness. (Neither strongly religious nor strongly anti-religious.)

I got 10, although most were just guesses. Doesn't change the fact that I'm still super secular. Also, you don't have to be religious to think "God Bless America, except California". From what I've seen, plenty of Oregonians think the same thing, regardless of whether they're religious or not.

Bullets:
Is it useful to know about the mythologies and practices of (major) religions and their denominations (e.g. Christianity, Islam)?
The practices are different?
Well, I suppose there's some sense to learning about them, but it doesn't mean you should follow them.
Is it sensible to separate the three Abrahamic faiths into three religions?
Not really. They're the same basic idea, they just have different names for their god and different ways of worshipping them. To me, they're like different sects of the same religion. Instead of Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox, all under the blanket of Christianity, it should be Christian, Jewish, and Muslim all under the blanket of Abrahamism. They're just not all that different, despite what some people might like to think.
Would you, personally, rather be/have been raised in a religious or anti-religious household?
Personally, definitely anti-religious. I did grow up in an anti-religious household anyway, and I personally am anti-religious as a result. I wouldn't want to have to live with the religious, as I see their beliefs and illogical and confusing.

I'm an atheist and got 14 out of 15. I got the question about salvation coming through faith alone wrong. It was the only question I had to guess at.

Got 13, so feeling somewhat satisfied. My wrong answers were the Sabbath (made an assumption and put down Saturday thinking of that as the day of the Sabbath, not the actual beginning) and the city Jesus grew up in (of course, Jesus of Nazareth, shouldn't have overthought it)...

Not bad for a firmly convinced atheist though. :)

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Careful with the Sabbath one. It goes through Saturday, but it starts on Friday.

Got 13 right, don't know what kabbalah is. Damn, could have had 14 but I second-guessed myself about the start of the Jewish holy day. I thought it was Friday but then picked Saturday.
