Given it's India and the location, it wouldn't surprise me if those decisions were being made after birth.

Considering the proliferation of underground abortion clinics and forced sterilization, as well as orphan females, I'd most likely say India tries to prevent them prenatally.

Although I wouldn't say the life of an unwanted Indian girl would be much better than one that was dead.

Performing sonograms to find out the gender of the fetus are common among those who can pay a doctor under the table for one. Yes. Even though this practice has been outlawed in India.

I believe that the sex ratio in India varies drastically depending on the region(though there are more males than females in India) though I haven't found whether these statistics apply for the same region or not. I believe this sex ratio is due to cultural views of daughters as "financial burdens" and the practice of sexual selection in favor of baby boys.

In most societies its males that're less valuable than women, and they're not wrong to think that in the sense that fewer men can still manage to impregnate lots of women but a population expansion simply can't happen if the reverse scenario is true where there is a severe shortage of men but a surplus of women.

This is a problem because it's hurting the population, and we need more people. I'd solve it by banning abortion altogether, then seeing what happens.

Wouldn't necessarily help. Pakistan bans abortion unless the mother's life is in danger and hospitals follow that due to religiosity, but Pakistan still has one of the highest rates of abortion in the world, it is just self-administered or done on the black market. What India is dealing with is economic recovery from colonialism, which will take a long time to fix. It has nothing to do with hating women, daughters just aren't assets, they're liabilities in undeveloped countries. Telling people here with multiple daughters to have more is telling them to starve in many cases.

No, more likely natural probability. In a country as enormous as India, there are bound to be villages where only one sex is born for a season. Journalists being as informative as they are count the total of all the villages that only produced boys, then use it as a headline.
