And somehow, the point has whizzed over your head again.

To say something is 'not widespread', and then to say it is being reported on three different continents, kind of is, I don't know, a bit of conflicting information?

If I said "it only happens in the US!" maybe it's not an issue for people outside.
It apparently is an issue for people in Spain, the UK, and Russia as well.

Being legislated on in one city in Spain and having an individual assault someone in Russia while someone makes an art project in the UK across three whole continents that include thousands of cities and dozens of countries that have done nothing is not widespread.

Planking seems to have claimed very few. Sad that it cost anyone their lives, but I think it's a handful in comparison.

Yes, 12,000 people is a lot, but for something as minor as manspreading? C'mon. Punishing people because 12,000 people think it should be done is just... unfair.

Again.

Don't put words in my mouth. I never said to punish them. Others have.

I said be courteous.

Others apparently cannot manage this very simple behavior, and cannot read what's actually on the page.

It isn't really helping in this case, though.

Clearly. Sometimes you look like a fool no matter how much you pretend something is a widespread problem. It happens.

Seats, taking up an isle is a safety concern if there is a problem.

Good point.

OK enough, I know I have posted here but I am giving this thread a chance to cool off for 30 minutes before it descends further.

Thinking about the length of my thighs, and I had a thought.

People with longer legs. When they sit on those subway train seats. If they put their knees straight ahead. And someone on the other side of the carriage of similar leg length does the same. Does it make it difficult for people to move up and down the aisle to get on/off the train ?

My main problem is that I see it as a non-issue, or, at least, an issue not worthy of legislation or societal action, so any action taken against it I see as a waste of time, effort and money.

I don't see it as a non-issue in that I have had men push into my space and then attempt to make an "argument" about it when I push back. Being petite seems to make people think I am a pushover. I am not sure exactly what has been legislated so I can't say what is or is not appropriate.

I actively support measures to deal with asshole behaviour on public transport. What I don't support is specifically focusing efforts on one subset of asshole behaviour, in this case manspreading, unless that particular aspect is a major problem (which I don't think manspreading is, but that's just from my personal experiences).

If the law is part of a series of laws designed to deal with assholes on public transport, then good. If they're one-off things, unless it is a serious problem, I'm gonna be annoyed that they either wasted the resources on this one issue or refuse to deal with other issues caused by asshole behaviour.

And those guys who do that are dicks.

You made various posts that were flamebaiting and escalating things here. And no, the rules apply the same to everyone. *** 24-hour ban for Flamebaiting ***

This thread as a whole has been pretty heated for a while and while I will unlock the thread shortly, we need to get back on track to being more civil. Otherwise, it will be locked again for good.

I would think most asshole behaviors would fall somewhat under disturbing the peace. I would think that the bag thing would and should fall under the same thing as spreading.

At least on the trains and buses I have been on it hasn't been an issue for two tall people to sit across from each other while not spreading.

Men just have naturally wider statures, so a little spread is to be expected.

I guess it could be a problem if you're wearing shorts and your bratwurst is just hanging out, but that's more an issue of dress code than of spreading.

Also, penises are things that exist.

Well, if I hit three people out of a room of 30 in the face with a hammer, I think it's an issue for those three, no?

Yeah the only reason this post right here is not causing me to perma-lock this thread is because you just arrived here.

Well then of course, I’ll move over. But if I have two seats all to myself and nobody wants them, I’m putting my feet up. Not a big deal.

That wasn't an insult, the point was whether or not it's acceptable to ask someone to adopt an uncomfortable position for the sake of a small amount of space on public transport.

I agree with that.

Anyway, looks like it took martial law to get this thread back on track.

But really, what more is there to say?

Manspreading is fine if nobody needs the space, otherwise not fine.

And even then, shopping bags, backpacks, and purses take up a lot more space.
