Who started religion ? I propose it was started by schizophrenics. You can imagine how hard it was for a schizophrenic to achieve some state of normality. People had no idea that they were ran by delusional, voice hearing schizophrenics. You can imagine how hard it was without medication or therapy. The disorder was in full control of the schizophrenic, with a firm belief in "gods'" or spirits.
Because most of them were caught up with their delusional belief system, they could always tell people that spoke to spirits or gods. Because there was no proof they did not exist, people came to believe in "gods" or "spirits" . They started giving food and money to the schizophrenic who was a priest. That ensured that they wouldn't simply die off.
Others observed this and tried to gain the powers of speaking to the gods and spirits. Thus began religion.

I’m a hardcore atheist, but I don’t think religion was began by schizophrenics. It was created by people with a very limited understanding of the world trying to make sense of and take solace in the idea that the very confusing and complicated world was made by somebody who knew what they were doing, rather than by the mess of chaos that it really was.
