Berkley to cease using gendered language like "manhole"

Should other cities remove gendered words from their vocabulary too?

Of course. 'Manhole' is an inherently offensive term.

It's been awhile since I heard the term "man hours" on projects.

Tbf, we usually use the term "project hours" at our company. You hear manhours now and again, typically from finance more than anything, but usually we use "project hours" internally.

I think it's just called work hours, or project hours. That said, most companies did the smart thing and simply printed new terms on new forms, rather than wasting money reprinting old ones. Also, is it bad that I thought of Natalie Portman when port hole was being discussed in this thread? I think she should change her name to Natalia Portpeople to be more inclusive, and I'm all for inclusiveness in that specific case.

Neither do I, but given that it is listed on both sites, someone probably does somewhere.

Also "gasket" is an odd inclusion. "Bunghole" also leaves a whole lot of questions on the table.

That's what Berkeley should have done. Replace "manhole" with "bunghole".

Considering that it's Berkeley, banghole would've been more appropriate.

Not sure if misspelling intentional or not.

i love the idea, while at the same time understanding humorously obscure and possibly confusing consequences.
my faith is that in time people will get over them.

one could always rename some things entirely, simply for example: access covers.
its not really THAT difficult, honest.

i certain mentality will always love inventing excuses for misogyny.
of course, within this kind of limited context, if its kept within it,
granted that's not always a major problem either.
or at least not usually.

but you have to admit, the potential, at least some of the time, is there.

there are of course languages more intrinsically genedered then english too.
having to use forms of the artical "the" on the basis of mythically supposed genders is something of a hight of absurdity when refering to inanimate objects.

What does swapping a colloquial term for a technical one have to do with perceived misogyny aside from people needing to pretend this is about feminists oppressing men?

They should change the name of Berkeley to manhole. I have been there and the city literally stinks and there is garbage everywhere. It's like being in a sewer. Of course, tackling trigger words is far more important than dealing with all the pollution, crime, and homelessness.

Why does the term need swapping?

OP article wrote:"Having a male-centric municipal code is inaccurate and not reflective of our reality," Robinson said. "Women and non-binary individuals are just as entitled to accurate representation.

It is an pandering ideological motivated decision by feminists. It's not about "oppressing" men as much as it is about ridiculous nitpicking, the fact anything with "man" in it is perceived as oppression by feminists.

Keeping in mind this is a city code that expressly has a commission for women based on their gender, I think we can say it's a female-centric municipal code at this point, and men are not entitled to equal representation.

Which, to an unfortunate degree, is reflective of our reality - at least as far as politics is concerned.

Also, both manhole and maintenance hole are technical terms - with manhole being more specific.

Do technical documents normally use colloquialisms in place of actual technical terminology?

Meanwhile anything without "man" in it is perceived as oppression by the MRAs, as we've seen repeatedly in this very thread.

Have any MRAs even posted in this thread yet, much less called "anything without 'man" in it "oppression"? I'll admit I haven't read all 48 pages, so I could have missed it.

Or are you burning strawpersons again?

Also manhole is a technical term, and more specific than "maintenance hole".

I didn't know "human effort" was a technical term. I'm actually surprised they didn't go with "humyn" or 'humxn". Dropping the ball they are.

I'm not an MRA, nor a man, so not fishing for oppression points here.
