But "manhole" is generally understood to mean an access point where the opening is large enough for a person to fit through, whereas "maintenance access" is a catchall term that doesn't imply this distinction.

Berkeley really isn't doing itself any favors here.

You can call anything maintenance access if it provides access to something that may need maintenance; a door to ventilation, a ladder, a manhole...

Meanwhile, a manhole is easily defined.

When I said "leave me out of it," I wasn't saying it to offend anyone. I wasn't saying it to be rude. I was saying it, because I've lost people I know because I've used "Gendered" words. I don't believe we should change the way we say specific words because of it. Instead, we could just use the pronouns people want to be addressed with. I also don't see why people are getting offended by words like "manhole." So, if what I said offended anyone, it wasn't meant to, and I apologize.
