I've been here for three years and these people are swarming everywhere, literally almost every street I see them crawling about. I think I've gathered a large enough representative sample size to form an informed opinion about these parasites.

I've been here for seven. I see homeless people around my neighbourhood and adjacent neighbourhoods, and they don't really cause those problems. Sure, there's the occasional theft and petty crime, and occasionally they're sleeping in your driveway, but that's just part of life. Maybe I'm just desensitised to it, but I don't see it as a large problem. I also don't live in a prestigious rich area. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you sound like you might be somebody from a rich area, who has now moved to a different place with more homelessness, and aren't used to it.

I'll admit the neighbourhood I live in in Singapore might not have the most affordable housing prices, but I don't think anyone's socioeconomic status has any bearing on their ability to form a sound opinion on a real public problem and concern. I'm clearly not the only one. Oxford City Council passed a series of anti-vagrancy and anti-homeless legislation because voters here are increasingly-irritated about the problem. So at the very least its not just me who is getting annoyed.

This has nothing to do with hiding poverty and everything to do with cleaning up the streets of a real public nuisance and menace.

Trying to solve homelessness by being annoying dicks to the homeless.

If this is not quintessential American culture, I don't know what is.

If it didn't work then that's a separate issue. There are other ways to solve the problem. Anti-homeless legislation is very effective, passing laws banning unauthorised encampments and loitering in certain public spaces can help clear the streets of these people. Or, installing hostile architecture works too.

A concept: instead of investing money and brain-calories into driving the homeless away, why not try to alleviate the causes of homelessness or build more shelters?

In the case of non aggressive panhandlers, it isn't parasitism. I spanged from time to time as a kid. I was never rude or intimidating and I stayed away from businesses. I don't see an issue.

I wasn't criticising panhandling specifically but the homeless do irritate me because many of them engage in harassment and aggressive panhandling and it is unfair to everyone else to have them around on public spaces and public streets.

One thing is cheap and easily implemented. The other is not.

As I've said before, those chastising the city for not ending homelessness need to put up the city budget and show where the money is going to come from.

If I'm busy and I'm trying to get to class or get to an internship I want to be able to get there without being stopped by people asking for change, is that too much to ask? I want to get somewhere and I want to get there without being bothered by strangers.
