At least 26 people are dead and dozens injured after a suspected arson attack at an animation studio in Kyoto, Japan, local emergency officials have said.

Local media quoted police as saying a man broke into the Kyoto Animation Co studio on Thursday morning. Police say the suspect, a 41-year-old, sprayed petrol before igniting it.

Some people still remain unaccounted for, broadcaster NHK reported.

The suspect has been detained and was taken to hospital with injuries.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the incident was "too appalling for words" and offered condolences to those affected.

In the latest turn of events: one of Japan's most notable animation studios - in terms of product quality and work conditions, relative to the rest of an industry otherwise known for appallingly low working standards - set on fire by arsonist.

35 have been confirmed 'deceased', nearly the same number injured - some in critical condition, shaking the entire nation of Japan and making this incident one of the country's worst mass murders since Aum Shinrikyo's attacks, and the worst arson incident in postwar Japan. The identities of these casualties have not been released by the authorities.

Will keep you posted.

Donations to help relieve families affected will be much appreciated. See below for two important routes.

https://www.gofundme.com/help-kyoani-heal - Legitimate gofundme set up by Sentai Filmworks, a US affiliate of Kyoto Animation. Downside is uncertainty of how Kyoto Animation can use these funds, as they will not go to them directly.

https://kyoani.shop-pro.jp/ - Kyoto Animation's (Japanese-language) store page. The money goes directly to Kyoto Animation, and hardly any processing effort is required on the staff's part. A guide has also been provided to conquer the language barrier.

I am wondering what the fire protection and alarm regulations in Japan are. (fire sprinklers etc)

Rarely do I hear of this animation company.

But this act is gruesome and disgusting. There may lie a reason behind all this, but no reason can justify wasting 26 lives. In fact, an expected [approx.] 30 as reports are to follow.

Do people value the gift of life anymore? How about the hard work made at the studio?

Sprinklers are all thing, but since this fire was gasoline-based, I really don't know if that could've been of much help.

I've been hearing a lot of stuff about this for the past few hours. Apparently the suspect did it because they felt ripped off by the studio or something.

From what I know the dude walked in with gasoline and ensured it was all burning. I don't think fire protection is really at fault here.

So the suspect decided to kill some innocent people in the process, instead of facing the fact we get ripped off a lot of times in life. Truly a man. /s

The fire was started by gasoline, and with that fast spreading fire, I doubt anyone had time to take enough fire extinguishers, if there were that many.

Yes! The President of South Korea had something to do with the Kyoto Animation studio set on fire.

How sad. Such talent wasted, and the joy that was brought forth by this man.

Some (yet to be sourced) speculation among Japanese social circles are pinning the perpetrator as being, of all things, a train enthusiast - and that one of the trailers by the studio has... employed trains...? If this is indeed confirmed somehow, this will be the most morbid reason for one of the worst mass murders in a country's history that I've ever heard.

(Take this one with a grain of salt.)

Now, listen, i never saw some of their animations (I was cut off from anime) but this just makes me angry, which idiot is willing to do this? and kill innocent people doing so? just...why? why would a person commit something so cruel and evil against innocent artists who have done nothing, i hope the man who caused this is jailed permanently, he deserves it.

Well, Japan's done some pretty bad things. A disaster like that shouldn't even be considered equivalent.

Humans like to avenge themselves in an illogical and selfish way. It disgusts me that they have the power to do such thing.

If that is confirmed, then I’d agree it’d be quite a morbid reason for such a tragedy.

What the heck is wrong with Japan? Blaming Asian counterparts like China about territory, exports, imports? I mean, come on. Don't they have better things to do?

How many Japanese people do we have here? I know the chances of getting a good answer to this are probably slim, but how are film stocks stored in Japan? Cuz if they're not in a vault or something that could explain how this spready so rapidly and why it was so deadly.

This is why.....i am disgusted at the worst of humanity, just why would a person be willing to do this? what justification does he have? what purpose does it serve? most importantly, how will he be dealt with? most of us want to see him imprisoned, and i am one of them.

The suspect is currently at hospital from the last time I read.
Though.....you know, sometimes people need not reasonable justifications to do bad things.

What is it with your types and going around comparing ongoing tragedies to events with more casualties? Do you like belittling the suffering of others for the sake of your agenda that much?

I wouldn't grace the Korean people with comments similar to yours had anything like this happened, why... are you bringing your politics in here?

Sadly, I doubt anyone here is currently in Japan, much less Kyoto, to have us updated.
