The whole thing is based on the erroneous assumption that the main reason for government recognition of marriage is child-rearing.

anyway before you yell at me i didnt right the article.
personally i think marriage should be a solely religious institution and civil unions (re-defined) secular.

Why should we have to go through a long and expensive name-change process? It is certainly possible for a single word to have more than one meaning.

It's nice that you went to the trouble of finding that source, however, it is nothing but a repetition of arguments that have already been debunked many times over in this very thread (not to mention out in the real world). Perhaps the author of the article should read the thread to get the full set of counter arguments. Also, the author being described as a "liberal" does not make her arguments any less false.

EDIT: Also, civil marriage is an institution that is thousands of years old. I see no reason for it suddenly disappear so religious people can lay claim to being their own little privileged and exclusive club.

This isn't the sticking-point question you would think it would be. The trouble is that there are a good many Christians who believe that they are to be "salt and light" in the world--preserving what is considered to be good and exposing/destroying what is considered to be evil. They believe that they are God's spokespeople, God's representatives, to Earth, and it is up to them to command what they believe God commands. Everyone else's business *is* their business, because everyone's business is God's business. Remember too that these Christians view the universe, not as a democracy, but as an absolute monarchy.

I can speak to this because I used to be "one of them" until I came out.

The thing is, the Bible also requires the obedience of the government's rules and laws. Getting gay marriage outlawed due to religious reasons, which is against the constitution of America is in fact against the word of the Bible. So yeah - they're damned for that, and the judge not, without sin and beam in your eye points.

Sure, why not. They pay taxes. Those Jews with the black clothing and long beards don't, because they go through the loop "oh, my house is my place of worship." Those jews shouldn't.

Huh? I've never heard of Chassidic Jews not paying taxes. Priests and nuns certainly pay taxes on their income.

I propose a bare-minimum legal contract between any number of consenting adults of any gender, race, or other defining characteristics, detailing their personal agreement on financial matters such as inheritance, as well as affording involved parties with certain legal rights and responsibilities as a consequence of their now legally binding partnership. The process involves all parties signing a register with a certified legal representative present. This can take place anywhere, and can be preceded or followed by any ceremony, religion-specific or otherwise, that the involved parties choose. It'll probably be called marriage, and it means anyone can marry anyone.

Setting aside the whole issue of multiple-person marriage, which is not the point here, why go to all this trouble when we can simply allow same-sex couples - two people - to marry in the same way any heterosexual couple can? Seriously, where I live it costs any straight couple ten bucks and a couple of signatures to get married.

Well in the UK, there is already an institution called 'civil partnership' which is supposed to be gay marriage, but is a shoddy knock-off that doesn't do the full job. Various state constitutions in the US, as I understand it, prohibit gay marriage under marriage's current legal definition. A simpler system is a better system. We need bolt-offs, not bolt-ons.
