Puerto Rican governor Ricardo Rosello has been dealing with tension on the hoefront this week in Puerto Rico after secretly leaked texts revealed the governor's involvement in manipulation of public narratives on relief efforts during hurricane Maria (which were severely lacking), attempts to discredit negative coverage, homophobic and misogynist slurs against opponents and support for violence against his rivals including the mayor of San Juan. Angry demonstrators took to the streets last night in the capital to voice their outrage and while the protest started out peaceful, it descended into chaos later in the night with protesters throwing rocks and bottles and erecting burning barricades while police fired tear gas and pepper spray to disperse demonstrators. Despite the leaks and widespread calls for governor Rosello to resign, Rosello has refused to step down and seeks to run for re-election next year, his ambivalence to the demonstrators only further fueling the fire.

So what are your opinions on the developing unrest and controversy in Puerto Rico? Should Rosello resign from his post and let someone else take his place? Is corruption a major problem on the island? How can we fix the government of the territory so it better serves the people it's supposed to represent?

The scandal is way worse than that. And it’s not just the governor. Key members of his staff were also caught manipulating and insulting. Not to mention that there’s a huge FBI investigation going on with quite a few arrests pending.

Yes, Rosselló needs to resign. The island is calling for it. Even his party had distanced itself from him. He’s lost the trust of the people.

Rosello's response is unfortunately an all too common response among Latin American politicians. People are mad at you for messing up? Just kinda mutter about being sorry and then pretend everyone still likes you

I think Puerto Rico needs to be kicked out of the US. Just give them their independence so that we don't have to deal with them.

I’ve been going to PR since I was a child. There have been major scandals there. This one however is different. I have never seen Puerto Ricans riot or set things ablaze in Old San Juan. Nor massive call for a governor to resign.

the american way. create a problem, refuse to fix it up, then throw it by the wayside and blame the problem on the locals.

Rosello needs to resign, immediately. He's not the ruler of a country, he's the governor of a territory and still answers to the US government, and he shouldn't be able to do shit like this.

This is starting to feel like they get all the disadvantages of independence, none of the perks. US gov does help 'em to an extent though, just much, much less then you could pray for. If Hawaii was hit with a hurricane like this, wouldn't we react better?

Hope he resigns corruption only destroys a government not help it. I'm surprised the U.S. government isn't doing anything to fix this problem.

The entire government there needs to be cleaned out. It's a disgrace to have a US territory be infested with such corruption.

We need to annex Puerto Rico directly as a state and bring better governance.

Eh, Illinois is a corrupt morass of a state. But I agree that the current government in PR needs a good flushing out. And don’t protect a governor from repercussions just by virtue of his position.

It's no secret that the Puerto Rican government is highly corrupt that the island is a pretty violent place. None of this surprises me. Should the governor resign? Yes. But that alone won't bring any real change. The Puerto Rican government and society need to be reformed from the ground up.
