Do you get Satya stuff over in the states? Probably the most reliable one I have found, though the lavender one smells weirdly of cat urine.

Fucking love Satya! Satya Nag Champa is my go to! Hem is a decent brand, too. And Song of India.

In an ideal world MLMs wouldn't exist because capitalism wouldn't exist and all exchange between humans would be mutual aid. But anyway, as a matter of principle I think people are free to get involved in whatever stupid shit they want but the stupid shit must be disclosed in full, otherwise it's fraud. So I guess I'm alright with MLMs existing but anyone they bring into the pyramid scheme must be presented with a disclaimer that explains how it works and up to date statistics on what percents of people involved are making or losing money.

The thing is you can make money selling these products, however the other thing is that you won't do it selling to freinds and family as is widely implied.

To be honest I had never thought Avon was fully part of this kind of thing, I had assumed that with them thier local agents just took your order and passed it straight to the company with nobody taking cuts in between for recruiting folks. Must be the power of marketing.

Funnily enough I had an m8 who tried selling Foreve Aloe but I don't know how much of that was his or his wife's idea.

You know, I've heard that about Skin So Soft. I've never used it myself.

Amway's other products are allegedly hot garbage.

It was the go to camping shortcut back in the day, didnt smell to bad either. For some reason I seem to remember Sears or someone selling it as well.

I had a friends mom who was seriously into Amway, what I recall is they had a couple decent products, but nothing worth justifying the price.

You'll always find suckers who want to believe that a get-rich-quick scheme will most certainly work, because all those graphs and testimonials accompanied by pictures of handsome smiling people sure are impressive and just add to the undeniable truth of it all.

No. You won't make money off the products. You make money off your downline.

Avon has a slightly better model in that you really can just sell the junk and make a small profit. It seems to rely less on downlines and doesn't, iirc, require minimum orders.

Tupperware, if my mind isn't failing me, has been a Direct Sales company with few commission incentives to build a downline. Historically it was one of the cleaner Direct Sales companies. I don't know how they do business now.

I nearly got suckered into one. So there was a "business meeting" that I was asked to go. I was like... hey, why not, right? Maybe it is Business 101 for high school students, or some shit like that.

Nope. It was in a small apartment, there were meaningless pie charts and statistics, and everyone talking about "referrals" or "ask your friends and family", amongst a crapton of other things.

I was done with it, and they were like "We can keep in touch! There are other meetings!"

I never went again... then again, it was less because I didn't know, and more of because I was lazy. I was such a gullible 19 y/o back in 2014.

-----

And the thing about MLMs and the pyramid schemes are that they are the opposite of a good business model for an everyday Joe or Jane like me and you. Suppose that you make $100 a week moonlighting and selling these products. You are the only one in the neighborhood. Now, after referrals and other bonuses that they promised, you recruited 9 more people, let's just say. Then you have 10 people in the same neighborhood selling the same crap, and you will at best get maybe $10 a week.

In a world of business, cooperation rarely works, and you seriously don't want anyone else selling the same stuff as you, or they will chip in into your sales and commissions.

Slightly helps that I am a dude, but... even for a dude, yeah, I am glad I wasn't sucked in so very badly, or wooed with all the buzzwords. :P

To be fair, there are like 5-6 other people with me, so I totally didn't go in alone.

The funny thing is, I was partially suckered in, but I didn't pursue further because I was lazy; at that time, I didn't know they are MLMs.

Hey, I'm a dude too. Meeting strangers at an apartment just triggers my "you're gonna get jumped" senses.

And thank god for laziness sometimes! Think how much money you'd have lost if you'd been ambitious!

Looking back, yeah... that was actually a pretty bold (and dumb, and dangerous) decision. If it is at some function or a convention centre, that's fine. But an apartment in some neighborhood? Yeah, I got lucky, haha!

If I decided to pursue, I'm sure I will have better luck (and fun) just spending the money on a game riddled with in-app purchases, than to take part in a MLM.

----

One of the names that I have heard here (in Singapore) so far is Amway. I have not heard of anyone else operating, but... yep, Amway is more or less here.

I also heard that Amway got kicked out of America or something to that effect? Like, I heard they can't operate in USA anymore.

That's true. It's just terrible for everyone when an older relative starts hawking an MLM.
"No, Aunt Helen, I don't want to buy your travel package. I know it says 'all inclusive' but last time I still had to pay for the hotel."

Unfortunately, I think older people might double up more often, so your Granny selling Avon may also sell Arbonne or Herbalife. But MLMs are hardly the only industry that preys on the vulnerability of the elderly.
