Non poisonous spiders are fine. My bedroom at my last place of residence was actually spider central and the ceiling was just absolutely covered in webs.

Poisonous spiders get introduced to Mr Welding Torch Flame.

Spiders (order Araneae) are air-breathing arthropods that have eight legs and chelicerae with fangs able to inject venom.

There is no non-poisonous spider ("non-venomous", more accurately).

The families Uloboridae and Holarchaeidae, and some Liphistiidae spiders, have lost their venom glands, and kill their prey with silk instead.

Some of the blokes went off on a hunt to blowdart monkeys for meat but along the way they would catch tarantulas as supplies during the trip. They cooked them over fires and ate the whole thing with the exception of the fangs. Those they pulled out to use as toothpicks when they were done eating. It was all quite fascinating.

I do so wonder what tarantula taste like. I'm an adventurous eater and my curiosity for flavors overwhelms my fear of large spiders.

Fun fact: most cases of brown recluse bites are actually misdiagnosed, and it's often actually MRSA.

Fun fact: most cases of brown recluse bites are actually misdiagnosed, and it's often actually MRSA.

Brown recluses are also relatively docile and take a significant amount of prompting to bite, and at least half of bites are not in any way medically significant. Some are so small that they may have trouble penetrating human skin.
Additionally, they are present in far smaller ranges than most believe them to be. Loxosceles reclusa, the species most mean when they say "brown recluse," is only found in the Midwest and northern South of the United States. Spiders identified as L. reclusa outside their range are usually misidentified, as there are a variety of small brown spiders that could be mistaken by non-specialists for L. reclusa.

Even I am being swayed to mellow my dislike of spiders. :)

Perhaps there's hope for improvement in human-arachnid relations after all!

And I'm glad you liked the thread. I'm trying to post more threads that aren't the usual circular debates and wankfests. There's more to discuss than politics, after all!

I hate to ruin the mood, but a lot of spiders don't necessarily engage in sexual cannibalism - Blaat could've met a spiderwoman who wasn't hungry or just didn't feel like eating him.

I can definitely appreciate the value of a good animal thread for sure. That is perhaps the only thing we can both agree on, but it's a good one.

Depends. One crawling around outside on the sidewalk? Fine. One dropping from the ceiling onto my face while I’m sleeping? NO.

My cat, on the other hand, thinks they (along with cobwebs) are tasty.

If it's in the house, engage on sight. If it's outside the house, as long as it doesn't fucking climb on me I couldn't care less.

Yeah, when they crawl on you it is the most disgusting feeling.

I always let spiders climb on me if they want to, and gently direct them towards the wall or ground. It's safer for them than flicking them off.

I've had to handle my tarantula before and it doesn't really feel like much. It's a bit like a small mouse treading lightly on your hand. I guess it's a little more weird when small spiders climb on you, but I'm totally used to that leggy sensation from millipedes. Handling one of those is like holding 30 small spiders walking slowly in lockstep.
