It's almost ironical that the only reason Lenin and company ever got to power is because desperate German conservatives saw Lenin as a tool to help them win WW1. That sure ended up backfiring spectacularly. The world would have been a lot better off if Lenin and Stalin had died in exile.

Yes that first revolution would have. But if the Kaiser and German conservative/militarists don't allow Lenin to travel through Germany, he simply doesn't get there. Going through France or Italy wasn't an option since they would have shot him on sight, and thus only Germany was a way for him to get there. And basically, between 1914-1917 they would have shot him on sight too. He was stuck in Switzerland and he knew it. Germany's desperate needs in the war changed all of that.

And without Lenin to lead the Bolsheviks there is no way that party takes power. They were a minuscule movement at the start of 1917. The socalled Socialist-Revolutionary party (the SR's) would have dominated the Soviet and the Bolsheviks had no other leader of Lenin's stature and cunning. Trotsky wasn't even a Bolshevik at that time and would likely never have returned to the fold without Lenin. Stalin and Kamenev were writing a party programme calling for support of the provisional government... when Lenin returned, he changed everything to flat out opposition. And his uncompromising anti-war stance got them much support, but that doesn't happen if Lenin isn't there. And then the second 1917 revolution (the october Bolshevik coup) doesn't happen either.
Heck, even with Lenin there the SR's won the elections in late 1917.... imagine without him the margin would have been much greater.

Just like the Holocaust doesn't happen without Hitler and the Nazis (though likely still some kind of right wing/military government with some discrimination of jews and perhaps even war), the whole Bolshevik terror doesn't happen without Lenin there to implement it. Sure, the Socialist-Revolutionaries would still have seized much of the land and put a bunch of tsarist officials on trial but they would not carried out the Bolshevik starvation tactics or the terror and mass shootings. I admit, it's a big "what-if" but I firmly believe it.
