I really shouldn't say it but it's almost a shame the southerners didn't try to hold out for another month or two. I would imagine the whole "let's end this war, finally" business had something to do with them abstaining. Hanging Confederate generals and politicians might have satisfied the North's desire for revenge, but it probably would've triggered far more guerrilla violence in the southern states and led to a much bloodier post-war period. Reintegrating rebellious states is a bit of a different business from conquering a foreign nation after a successful campaign.

It's possible to determine one's racial (or clinal) background genetically. So clines of Homo sapiens are definitely a legitimate and scientific concept.
