Did you celebrate Nathan Bedford Forrest Day?

Postby Bombadil » Sun Jul 14, 2019 9:43 pm

Tennessee's Republican governor, Bill Lee, is facing public backlash after he declared Saturday "Nathan Bedford Forrest Day," continuing a decades-old tradition honoring the Confederate general, slave trader and onetime leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Under state law, governors are required to recognize Forrest on July 13 as part of one of six "days of special observance" each year. The law also calls for a "Robert E. Lee Day" on January 19, and a "Memorial Day" or "Confederate Decoration Day" on June 3.

Normally it's Alabama or Florida that generate some WTF news but Tennessee does need it's day in the sun.

Even old Grandpa Munster is against this..

Some of the outcry came from members of Lee's own party. On Friday, GOP Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas took to Twitter to condemn the governor's move, calling Forrest "a slave trader & the 1st Grand Wizard of the KKK."

Well if you only focus on the bad parts.. he's actually recognised for being 'an important military leader'.

In his defence..

In remarks on Thursday, Lee said, "I haven't even looked at that law, other than knowing I needed to comply with it, so that's what I did."

Does one need to comply with it, aren't there all sorts of weird laws that no one really pays attention to anymore, and regardless this is 2019.. why is such a law on the books anyway.

Why aren't these laws dropped in this day and age?

Still.. did you celebrate, what are the traditions of Nathan Bedford Forrest Day.. hot cross buns?

Yes he created the KKK but he was probably the best calvary commander during the Civil War.

Surely they could just ignore it, I mean it's apparently illegal to get a fish drunk in Ohio but clearly no one's following that law given the violent ill-tempered bass that constantly roam the streets looking for a fight.

Ideally repeal it but otherwise just ignore it.

Easy to say but then you have the Governor going around proclamating and all.

I didn't. I'm also from California and currently living in Nevada, where the most confederate thing we have is Jeff Davis peak, which is about to be renamed to Doso Doyabi soon to disassociate it with the Confederates.

You do know that had Virginia not left the Union, he would have stayed in the U.S Army. He was loyal to his home state of Virginia so when they joined the CSA, he joined their Army.

Pretty sure the oath he took as a member of the US Army said something about protecting the Constitution of the United States. It may even have mentioned all enemies, foreign and domestic.

I'm from the South and my family has been here since before Civil War. We owned land but we never owned slaves. You do know that a vast majority of Southerners during and before the Civil War didn't own slaves.

Beto O'Rourke's family did though.. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/201 ... SApp_Other

Regardless Forrest basically founded the KKK, he simply shouldn't be celebrated.

I have the same question Neanderthaland has. I'm from the south as well, born and raised, still living here. You don't see me going around waving the rebel flag talking about "the south'll rise!".

Yes, namely that he's a Confederate, a supporter of keeping slaves enslaved, free blacks deprived of most rights, and everyone else acquiescing.

And yet your ancestors would not have minded others owning slaves. They certainly didn't mind the reprisals and massacres that happened in the successful effort to end Reconstruction and put in its place eighty-odd years of Jim Crow nonsense.

So why celebrate them, instead of, you know, putting them in their proper, shamefaced perspective?

And even if they did, who gives a shit? How many generations need to be punished for the actions of a minority over 200 years ago? Move the fuck on. I mean if France and Germany can become close allies after what Germany did to France in both WW1 and WW2, surely the whole North South thing can finally croak and american can finally move the hell forward.

And what would it achieve? Hmm? If it turns out something you believe in and seems natural to you, turns out to be morally reprehensible 200 years from now, does that mean your decedents should shame you?
