I didn't know that either.

Also, this why they kicked DLN out of mod club or was this after that happened?

IIRC, that was shortly after DLN was de-modded.

If you were active in NSG or the mod forum the tail end of her time as a mod, you can probably make some educated guesses about why she was de-modded. A lot of the controversial rulings from that time period were hers.

It was a spin-off primarily created in protest at what people said was NSG's unfair moderation and bad forum culture, and it described itself thusly:

"This is a forum for grown-ups and people who are capable of acting like grown-ups. That doesn't mean you can't be silly (we encourage silly!) but it does mean we won't look kindly upon immature behavior."

This 'acting like grown ups', 'maturity', and avoiding 'unfair moderation' surprisingly very soon involved moderators retrospectively and maliciously putting in "word filters" to deliberately alter posts that they disagreed with in an effort to make said users look stupid. It also involved moderators sending personal threats by PM, only accepting new members with the unanimous acceptance of all of the existing members, and the most popular thread by far being one about NSG where people smugly quote-mined this forum and patted themselves on the back for being better than it.

I was blackballed from joining that forum, which I resented all the more since I'd been urged by other members to 'come on over'.
But I got over it rather quickly; nothing but bad vibes ever seemed to come from there, and now I hear an insider's account I think I was better off for not being admitted. Thanks for that.

I was invited to join - at least twice - and refused. I politely but briefly declined the first one . When Neo Art approached me directly, I didn't reply, and had to ask someone else who I knew was a member of the forum to ask them to stop bothering me.

It would be impolitic for me to go into much more detail, but it would be fair to note that I was disinclined to join a forum set up by someone who used to send me long harassing telegrammes about my failures as a moderator, but suddenly seemed to have decided that maybe he wanted me to join his little coven after all.

In the interests of balance I should point out that I was personally there only for a year or two. My political views shifted somewhat, which brought me into conflict with their idea of who should be there. This in turn led to growing tension.

I was unable in the longer-term to restrain myself from commenting about how the site was organised, how allowing radical feminists and other people with very narrow discourse windows to dictate who was allowed to join made the desired "adult discussion" virtually impossible, since only those with very specific views or those who didn't debate would be accepted for joining.

My account was soon banned, so I have no direct knowledge of whether it improved thereafter. However, I know a couple of people who were there much longer and apparently it continued to spend much of its time talking shit about people behind their backs.

I stand by my description, but I was by no means an "insider" and I have obvious biases as someone who had a dispute severe enough to end in permaban.

I know one shouldn't gloat but after what that fuck did, I'm glad this is what transpired.

Although, of course, I still wanted to join The (Bat) Cavern. I mean, it stole about half the posters I regularly engaged with. I miss The Steel Magnolia even now. And NttP was mostly okay.

But, on the other hand, I guess it suggests maybe there weren't enough members in NSG even circa 2013 to sustain a splinter forum.

I can't say I ever noticed DLN's getting more controversial. I will say that she probably should have stopped the incident I allude to above differently, but as far as I can tell NSG has never had rules against defaming/making shit up about other posters... and has always openly tolerated bullying. Which is to say... I was probably reasonably lucky DLN's solution was just to lock the thread and do nothing else.

I am honestly shocked to hear this.

I mean, while I'm being honest, I preferred the NFP days, but these were probably the NFP days.

In other news, has anyone remembered Laerod yet?

That's good. I mostly remember him from A&F anyway.

A&F's always had a better vibe actually. Probably, and NttP had a thread about this, because the kinds of topics that would help mellow NSG out aren't allowed. Even your Legends thread... I kind of suspect if you'd just posted it to NSG it would've been kicked to A&F.

I know.

I'm saying that if you'd just posted it, there's a good chance the first mod that cared might have just carted it along. Similar to how threads that can have dozens of pages of non-spam can get locked for being "blogs". Or how the latest Centrist Thread only seems to exist because Farn couldn't find any of the others. (If you're reading this Farn, you're quite right... there have been others, for example...the 2012 version.)

If we're getting into history..

DLN should never have been made a mod, the signs she was ridiculously authoritarian were there long before she was modded.
Is the Batcave the same as the Unmoderated Paradise..
Seeing Aelosia pop up, didn't she con money out of Melkor?

Ultimately I'm sure lovely friendships have been made here, people actually met in NSG meet ups in London and SF but my feeling has always been believe nothing and just post your views - that why I'm entirely fine with the idea some people are presenting idealised versions of themselves, some are posting truth but, whatever, you're viewing opinions either way.

Ganos Lao, according to research, has been warned multiple times for trolling with animated GIFs. He or she apparently got smacked once for it and did it again within twenty-four days and got a one-day ban. Not a favourable NS'er, nor memorable.

You’re equating being memorable with being favorable. As you can see by this thread, people finding certain posters memorable has nothing to do with whether they got a lot or warns or not.

Yeah, I believe he or she has been offline for a while, probably from the blow by the moderators.

Possibly.

Someone I do remember fondly from F7 is Inchland. Nice Irish chap. He was fun to talk to.

Interesting fellow, indeed. I haven't checked the F7 threads. I just tread around NSG, Arts, and RP, basically.

You won’t get anything on Inchland. F7 auto-prunes itself and anything he posted there is long gone.

On second glance, he’s still around. I guess he dabbles on Gameplay.

Mentioning the bat cavern made me realize I haven't been to Fools Paradise in quite a while. FP is an offshoot of Beeks original offshoot forum FUA.

I and a lot of the original Night Crew were there on FP.

Hence why I mentioned Keshiland. Memorable for all the wrong reasons. Smacked multiple times, multiple long forumbans, multiple nations DEATed, and eventually DOS.
