The advantage is you pay someone $40k once and than have them as your property for life.

You buy someone, then you have to build em a house, keep their health up, feed em, water em, potentially chase em down when all this free stuff isn't to their liking...

The 19th century arguement against slavery was already in effect in the Northern States. For the price of one slave you got 2-4 expendable workers you could let go on a whim. You don't have to house workers, feed em, or find em if they run away. A worker also has incentive to work hard. Good work is rewarded with more money... beatings are not an incentive to do better, rather do the bare minimum. Free labor is cheaper and more effective.

And that's just the coldest of economic takes on it. I won't bother to mention slavery is a fucking repulsive institute that should have never come into existence nevermind been fought over to preserve. I think we all know that.
