People in Canada sporting Fred Perry polos or official Proud Boys insignia “are simply posers,” the far-right group said in a statement announcing that its Canadian faction is disbanding.

“There is officially no longer any Proud Boys in Canada, it’s officially dissolved,” Proud Boys Canada said Sunday on Telegram.

The Proud Boys is a white nationalist men’s group that was founded in 2016 by Canadian Gavin McInnes, who also co-founded Vice Media in the ‘90s. The Southern Poverty Law Center declared the Proud Boys a hate group for its misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigration ideology. Several of the group’s members have been arrested and charged in connection with the insurrection on the U.S. Capitol in January.

In February, Canada designated the Proud Boys a terrorist organization.

“In the aftermath of the U.S. presidential election, we’ve seen an escalation in support that signals an escalation towards violence, for a number of different groups, including the Proud Boys,” the country’s Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said at a news conference in February. Proud Boys Canada said in a statement that its members are “not terrorists or a white supremacy group,” but rather, “regular patriotic Canadians.”

“As a fraternity of men we had thought of [pursuing] the case legally but we have no financial support, given we are not funded by the rich,” the group said.

The U.S. Proud Boys said in a separate statement of their Canadian counterpart’s decision: “Their livelihoods and that of their future generations must come first. Fighting [the terror designation] in court will prove to be expensive and time consuming, Time that must be taken away from raising their children and loving their wives. They will continue to fight for western values...but now...as individuals.”

Finally! It's not like they were as active as the US one, but it's still refreshing to see far-right terrorism recognized as such, and not "people exercising their right to free speech"

Canadian terrorists are apparently so polite that when the government calls them terrorists they immediately disband. :p

But this is great news.

Good. Maybe they can work on growing the fuck up now that they have free time and aren't training to battle antifa every day.

I'm almost certain that many of the ex-Proud Boys will form a new group under a different name, and we'll probably be playing whack-a-mole as they reveal themselves.

Still I like your description (bolded).

In what way are the Proud Boys terrorists or right-wing extremists?

I think that they're considered right wing extremists in the media cause they stormed the US Capitol, but that's the American Proud Boys. I honestly hadn't heard much about the Canadian chapter here until now that it's being disbanded.

Now that it's getting serious, Parliament agrees to legal review of Bill C-10

J.J. McCullogh's Youtube page did something about this, and it is excessive, I'm not going to lie. The crux of the bill is that streaming and social media, because Youtube and Facebook Watch and the like will be considered streaming, will be placed under the oversight of the CRTC. And the Liberals seem to be in favour of putting the squeeze on content creators as well as the big streaming studios if what Guilbeault said on CTV last week is true.

That's.... absolutely terrible for Canadian content creators. And yet I can very well see this passing as a result... fuck.

The Minister did backtrack and said that "social media users will never be regulated" by that bill.

Anyway, Jagmeet Singh said that there is a link between anti-maskers and far-right extremism, which given the Canadian Nationalist Party flag was flown at an anti-mask rally here in Saskatoon on Sunday... I am inclined to agree with Singh that some sort of connection does exist.

Yeah, I think the bill is really just about making big companies like Youtube follow the CRTC's guidelines (the most important one being that there needs to be a certain portion of Canadian content offered, something which I agree with). The Liberals (as usual) shot themselves in the foot by even mentioning content creators in one of the drafts of the bill - and it's not even in its final draft yet so there's still opportunity to clarify everything. The whole 'free speech' debate isn't really relevant with this bill cause the CRTC doesn't have the power to take down content and the only way they could get that power would be if the supreme court were to get rid of our bill of rights lol

f*ck. This is not good. I pray, pray that the NDP and Bloc vote against. Hopefully this NDP will vote against, but the Bloc? Well, they've always been the wildcard. Who knows what they'll do.

Unfortunately, I've lost faith in the NDP to present more than token resistance to Trudeau's agenda. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Singh somehow found a way to justify this.

Quebec proposing Bill 96, which would include a provincial amendment to the federal constitution declaring Quebec a nation within the confederation and declaring that French is the only official language of the province

Basically, Bill 101 on steroids, and Trudeau says they have the right to do it, which is technically true, provincial amendments only require the province in question and a simple majority in both federal houses.

That's taking it way too far. There are still English speakers in Quebec, and this will make them feel even more alienated. I mean, the Quebecois government is basically committing a cultural genocide at this point, and the federal government seems keen on letting them do so.

Also, there was a virtual NDP meeting a couple of days ago that was a joint meeting for the riding associations of mine and Vancouver-Kingsway, and the speaker from Vancouver Kingsway basically tried to prove the Big Pharma Conspiracy, or at least in a sense.

^ Epic ideology
But then again I think the argument is that the far right and anti maskers agree on certain topics

There's really two original strains of 'anti mask' ideology that have more or less mingled together over the last year and a bit - you have the anti mask sentiment that emerged organically out of the antivaxxer community and its orbiting circles of 'natural medicine' people and then you have the strain that evolved out of right wing circles and neatly slotted in to existing conspiracies about the Great Replacement and government tyranny. Your aunt who talks a lot about auras and vibrations and how masks are unhealthy may not be a right winger but chances are expressing interest in things like anti mask groups on Facebook will algorithmically serve them up a lot of right wing content. And as a result a lot of people are drifting into that right wing orbit - I'd say at this point the majority of anti maskers are rightist because of that drift.

How is it Bill 101 on steroids? People wish they had this one instead. Québec is far from having a very restrictive language law.

Well, Bill 96 toughens the current laws on signage and use of French in everyday matters and it effectively enshrines them in the constitution.
