More attention to the OTHER members of the lgbtq+

Postby Nrutasica » Sat Jun 29, 2019 12:37 am

Hello,
I am the leader of a relatively new nation, Nrutasica (yes, Saturn backwards + "ica". Hence the flag) and part of a lesser known part of the LGBT+ community: Asexuality. Since it is pride month, I wanted to discuss the lesser talked about members such as Aromatics, Asexuals, gender queers, pansexuals and such. There are many misconceptions regarding these specific terms. When I came out to a friend, for example, she told me that no, I haven't tried it yet so I wouldn't know. Asexuality is an attraction, not an an action. Another told me that's impossible since I have had crushes. Well, asexual and aromantic are different things. I, for instance, am a biromantic asexual. Also, I have friends who are pansexual. They have told me that people thought that pansexuals could fall in love with objects, which is not the case. And I, for example, don't understand gender queer. I just know it exists. The fact that this is happening in 2019 is quite troubling. Therefore, I believe that these aspects of the LGBT+ should be discussed more in schools, for instance, rather than bullying or smoking. I'm interested in seeing who agrees and disagrees and why. Let the debate begin

I don’t usually have sex in my relations anyway unfortunately.

Might have something to do with our just being friends.

I don’t consider it particularly novel.

I really do think that one doesn't have to eschew other topics; these can all be addressed or discussed.

Ideally, when discussing sexuality, we ought to present every group (e.g. lesbian, gay, straight, bisexual, transgender, etc.).

Ace gang.

It makes sense on paper as a minority sexuality for it to be under the rainbow umbrella, but because so much of LGBT culture is hypersexualised, it's often hard for aces to feel much connection to a group who are very loud about kinks and fetishes and whose events are often oriented around a aesthetic of sleaze.

So I think it's normal for it to not be prominent in the "community" because to some degree the natural fit is more on paper than it is in reality. Strategic cooperation to share campaigning resources where its appropriate, but also awareness of a need to "reach out" in our own right, have separate forums, events, discussion groups etc because many won't feel comfortable if access to information is only via a larger subculture in which we're naturally always going to be on the edge.

Right, and do so as objectively as possible, i.e. without presenting any one sexual orientation as better or worse than the others.

Also, OP, as there are several different types of crushes, could you describe in more detail what you've had?

Different sexual preferences are being discussed differently because of the oppression and discrimination they receive. Asexuals and aromantics exist but they rarely get discussed because they don't receive the oppression other groups of people do. So while trans individuals may be just as common as asexual ones, it makes sense that trans issues are given more attention than asexuality.

The problem with ignoring asexuals is exactly that confusion between sexual attraction and romantic attraction, which leads some people to believe that asexuals are attention seekers or that they have some kind of "fixable" psychological problem that makes them asexual in the first place.

I have a friend actually who (thought he) had a girlfriend and literally never kissed her or...yeah. Anyways, it turned out she just thought he was her friend and didn't realize he wasn't joking when he said she was his girlfriend. I asked him if he would ever have sex with her and he would get so disgusted like "I DON'T WANNA HAVE SEX!" bruh, she's your girlfriend ( or supposedly was). That's kind of what you're supposed to do at some point. Anyways I can't imagine being with an attractive girl who I'm super close with and just being like "nah" when I think about sex

I've liked people based on personality and looks, I guess. Never had sexual feelings towards anyone and find the whole concept of sex kinda boring and pointless, tbh (disregarding reproduction). Sexual attraction just doesn't exist for me, which doesn't mean I don't think it's real. I know it's real, just not in my head.

That's fine. That's cause you are probably not asexual. Tbh, I don't believe it HAS to happen. This is also a struggle for us. Hard to find long term partners.

Sounds like the idea of a "friend crush" or a "squish" to me, then. Personally, for me a revolving door of crushes was my life from ages 12-16; the problem was that I could never be sure the girls liked me back or had any desire in having a long-term/permanent relationship with me.

You don't have to have sex with your girlfriend/boyfriend; I believe in holding out until marriage, and plenty of other people feel similarly, especially in socially conservative countries.

It’s a minority. Thus it’s not seen much, but it’s recognised as a group. I think that it’s fair enough. After all, you can’t expect everybody to give equal attention to ALL the sexualities. Some will be more prominent than others, and thus they will have more attention given and more impact taken.

For example, the United States’ President and Vice-President are most known for representing the nation, but you don’t know the other branches of the government and their ministers. Also, the states and their senators. Not everyone, especially worldwide will know.

Not to mention the fact you said those bold words (get the pun?) (words in bold). I strongly disagree. Bullying and smoking should be talked about more because we as a society should reflect on ourselves more, and grow up to be civilised and healthy citizens. Of course, we should learn about sexuality as well, and how to recognise the different groups, but never will I say, ‘These aspects of LGBT+ should be discussed rather than bullying or smoking.’
