Yep, although it's not just the matter of money, methinks. Beside the pesky bureaucracy, there's also little that foreign country can offer to U.S tourist beside cultural sight-seeing.

There's quite an overlap between the two.

Well it seems you can visit Iraq and Syria if you really wanted to.

U.S practically have every biome on the earth safe from tropical jungle and sand desert, which make travelling outside the country for that experience rather unattractive . Want to see the tropical beach? Hawaii. Enjoying winter wonderland? Wyoming. Fancy burning yourself to death? Arizona. The list goes on and on. It obviously different for Thais who could never enjoy snow on their own country, or Russia who doesn't have domestic destination for tropical paradise.

Cultural sight-seeing is a main attraction of tourism as a whole. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... l_visitors we don't exactly go to London (#3) for the nice weather. Nor to Hong Kong(#1) for the mountain scenery.

Nicaragua is actually a very nice place I would definitely take another trip there

I can't say it's safe, but I've been there several times and it's not too bad in the tourist areas. You are as likely to be robbed as other countries, but there is going to be some danger. Protests and police violence stirred things up last year and that's definitely something to keep in mind. Try not to get into a situation with police anyways.
My former grandfather lived there some of the last days of his life and brought food to the mountain region. That was risky, an old man by himself with food. For some reason, north of Managua is supposed to be more dangerous and always was been.
For now, I would recommend only visiting countries you know well and are politically stable for the time being. For example, I would like to visit Russia. But will I? If you have family or friends in thta country, it is better. If you don't and know little about the place, go to a country with a good political situation. There are some areas where you can walk in blind and other where that would be your end.

Wasn't talking about geography, I was talking about aspects like peoples, foodstuffs, attitudes, ways of living etc. But I suppose under the broad definition of cultural sightseeing those would be covered. Generally I would class "sightseeing" as being quite a narrow and shallow activity that doesn't involve diving into the culture and actually participating.

The Pacific Ocean between Japan/China and western USA/Canada is technically longer than the width of the USA right?

All my life I've been flying over it back and forth.

Countries I absolutely refuse to visit for political, cultural or ideological reasons include Mainland China, all Muslim-majority countries except for Malaysia where I'm from, North Korea, Russia, Venezuela, Belarus and Myanmar, as well as the Islamist states of Kelantan and Terengganu within Malaysia itself.

Countries I would avoid for safety reasons include most developing countries including all of Africa.
