The Male Pill

A couple from Edinburgh are among the first people in the world to use a male hormonal contraceptive.

James Owers, 29, and Diana Bardsley, 27, are part of a University of Edinburgh study involving 450 couples who are relying on a hormone gel as their sole form of contraceptive for the next 12 months.

The gel is a mixture of progesterone and testosterone. The progesterone switches off sperm production in the testes and the testosterone compensates for the drop in testosterone that this causes.

The hope is that couples in long-term relationships could eventually use the gel as an alternative to the female contraceptive pill.

This is simply brilliant if it works as advertised. Being able to bare back in a committed relationship with control as to the chance of conceiving for men is a huge step forwards.

Opinions? Complaints? Worries?

Oh, this is fascinating. I hope that this will help de-stigmatize contraception for AFAB people as well.

I don't think it's advertized yet, if it's only in clinical trials now. :P

The male contraceptive pill has been talked about for more than a decade, so I won't hold my breath until that trial's ended. Would be nice, of course, if it did work, as then the guys who worry that who ever the woman is they insist on dicking without a condom (which is still a bad idea with a stranger) isn't actually on the pill that she said she was, can take precautions. And share the side-effects.

AFAB?

Assigned female at birth. So, cis women and trans men who can still get pregnant.

AFAB?

Assigned Female at Birth

It's a gender-neutral way to say people with vaginas.

Anything that gives people control over their reproductive rights has to be considered a good thing

Nice. If this does work than that would be a pretty huge step forward.

I have been watching the development of this gel with great interest. It should be another great addition to the arsenal fighting against unwanted pregnancy.

Hard pass. I'm not interested for the same reason my wife doesn't take the pill. I'm not interested in fucking with my hormones.

Too bad it is not an aerosol so it could be spread by aeroplanes like the conspiracy theorists insist that the government does through chemtrails for a similar effect.
I wonder if a version meant to be taken orally could be made...

I'm never going to trust it. It's better in my view, for the woman to take contraceptives instead if they're so inclined. They only have one egg at a time, so its easier to intercept that than to interfere with a man's sperm supply.

If it makes you feel any better, progesterone is a hormone many trans women use for HRT, and the girls I know who're on it swear by it. It's pretty widely effective.

The pill is a God-send. You know whether it really is PMS or just the wife giving you shit.

I think that was their point ? Eradicating all STDs and the chance of unplanned pregnancies, with 100% success rates, would be a significant thing.

This is a great step forward provided it makes it through trials.

This helps prevent contraception, not the contracting of STDs.

I don't really see how this is any more attractive than just a rubber. But I guess more options is always better.
