What stimulates an erection?

Not all erections are triggered by sexual arousal. Dr Ferdi Marais, a urologist from Busamed Private Hospital in Somerset West, explains that an erection is a neuro-vascular phenomenon which can be psychogenic, reflexive or nocturnal in origin.

1) A psychogenic erection is caused by audio-visual stimuli or fantasy.

2) A reflexive erection is caused by touch or irritation of the penis or its nerve supply.

3) A nocturnal erection is a normal erection experienced during deep (REM) sleep.

Erections without arousal

In an article for the Boston University School of Medicine, Dr Irwin Goldstein writes that an erection is a carefully orchestrated series of events controlled by the central nervous system (CNS).

The penis is under the complete control of the CNS, both during sexual arousal and at rest. This can be explained through reflexive or nocturnal erections, says Dr Marais.

Reflexive erections bypass the brain and can happen in patients with complete spinal cord injuries. A full bladder can also cause a reflexive erection.

Nocturnal erections are caused by certain areas in the brain that get active during deep sleep. They send messages to the penile-blood flow via certain pelvic nerves to cause an erection.

Almost any strong emotion can cause a boner. Arousal, happiness, fun, excitement, even fear. Not to mention it responds to touch automatically regardless of mental state, happens while you’re damn asleep, and also spontaneously for no known reason at all.

I'd also note that men can be raped in ways other than those involving their penis. Anal sex, oral sex, even forcing someone to engage in sexual touching - all rape. It's not like someone with erectile dysfunction can't be raped or something.

A couple from Edinburgh are among the first people in the world to use a male hormonal contraceptive.

James Owers, 29, and Diana Bardsley, 27, are part of a University of Edinburgh study involving 450 couples who are relying on a hormone gel as their sole form of contraceptive for the next 12 months.

The gel is a mixture of progesterone and testosterone. The progesterone switches off sperm production in the testes and the testosterone compensates for the drop in testosterone that this causes.

The hope is that couples in long-term relationships could eventually use the gel as an alternative to the female contraceptive pill.

This is simply brilliant if it works as advertised. Being able to bare back in a committed relationship with control as to the chance of conceiving for men is a huge step forwards.

If this is a gel, its even more dangerous than a pill. If your skin comes into contact with it, (accidentally or otherwise) who knows how long it takes for the sterile effects to wear off?

Not to mention the nasty effects spermicidal gel has on some people, causing them not to use that. I suppose all in all this is a good thing though. If it keeps Earths population from continuing to increase, I am all for it.
