People like this man, as in people who say similar things. As a police officer, the man has an obligation to uphold the law for all citizens whether he likes them or not, so yes, he did cross the line in a very big way. However, what is considered "vile" is subjective. Some people think homosexuals are vile. Others think pastors are vile.

It is Christian values. Read Leviticus 20:13. Remember: all major religions (bar Baha'i maybe?) are that of violence. You have your obvious examples of Islam, then you have Buddhist terrorists, Christian evangelicals, the Jewish apartheid state known as Israel and Hindu nationalism.
