Re: Bibles in Hotel Rooms

Postby 95X » Fri Jun 14, 2019 10:52 pm

I don't think I've personally encountered a bible in any of the motel/hotel rooms I've been in (and I was raised Christian), but I have no problem with bibles in hotel rooms and I wouldn't make a travel accommodation decision based on whether or not a bible was in the room.

Even the dollar store sells bibles and it doesn't stop me from shopping there.

Replace them with copies of The Atheist-Annotated Bible... comes with a laugh track.

You open it and disembodied laughter just echos from the corners of your room? Is it the same voices that provide the Hallelujah chorus for normal Bibles?

Naw, it just has a button you can press whenever it notes a contradiction or whenever God says something along the lines of ‘Kill them all, let me sort them out!’

Or maybe it’s just an audiobook / commentary by Richard Dawkins.

They could do a similar version of the Quran with the aid of Sam Harris.

It's awfully presumptuous of them to leave Bibles.

Granted, eh, I don't mind it. In fact, I kinda wish more religions provided free holy texts. I could use more additions to my library.

I tried to get a Book of Mormon shipped to me but it got lost I think ._.

I'm not a fan of Christianity at all, but Gideon Bibles are easy to ignore.

I don't use the hair dryer either, but I don't get mad if there is one. Maybe other guests use it.

I personally do not mind seeing Bibles in my hotel room, but I do see how it can come off badly to some people.

It looks as though the hotel chain supports Christianity, which some people may take badly.

So, I'm gonna vote for 2. It's just much better to remove the source of the problem in the first place.

Slots a key card into the slot on the hotel room door handle. The light goes green. He turns the handle and pushes the door open. Nice room. Bright. Clean. The air smells fresh.
He crosses the room, and puts his bag on the bed. He opens the bedside drawer. He removes the copy of the Bible, turns, and places it on top of the desk. He turns back. He removes the copy of the Vedas, and places it respectfully on top of the Bible. Then the Sutras. Then the Quran. Then the Torah. Then the Prophecies of [violet].
Finally he opens his bag, and takes out his clean underwear which he places in the drawer.

Then, do another test where you remove all the short books of the Bible. I honestly wouldn’t know how people wouldn’t notice that, but some don’t read their bibles even though their church does.

I don't mind if Bibles or any other religious book are in hotel rooms, but I'm also not sure how many people have actually picked up a bible in their hotel room and started reading it.

I got my copy off ebay. People occasionally put the free ones for sale on there for a couple of dollars, it's an easy way of getting one without needing to be contacted by Mormons.

Don't think I've ever seen a bible in a hotel room, even though I visit Rome regularly as well as Poland.

Then again, both in Italy and in Poland people don't really pray outside of the Church. That tradition is pretty uniquely still followed only outside of Europe. Many still have a bible at home, though, I guess.

I don't even get what it is with this whole anti-Bible trend expressed by many people in this thread. Even if you are an unbeliever, the Bible had been a fundamental book for culture of Western civilization for the last 1500 years. Countless sayings are taken from it, and you can't understand many works of art, including paintings and sculptures without knowing what they are about.

As such, I feel perfectly fine with Bible being in any public place; after all, it's a human choice weather they want to believe what's written there, or not; but it's not possible to ignore the impact this book had on our culture. And if they don't like the book, well - one can always simply not pick it up.
