To be fair, can we be sure that whoever attacked the oil tankers had access to anti-ship missiles in the first place, assuming the crew reports are indeed accurate?

Literally any device capable of firing such a thing is capable of firing it at a ship. And, again, nobody ever said that it was fired from the air: it could just as easily have been fired from a small boat.

Counter theory. It was the Chinese trying to take eyes of what is happening in Hong Kong with the added bonus of disrupting oil supply to Taiwan.

Problem with this theory is that China needs Iran s oil. They are also investing billions in the oil industry in that nation. So a major war in Iran would do great harm to there investments.

Nah, RPGs aren't real, and it's totally not like they've ever been fired from a boat at any point in history ever to shoot a ship /s

I'm sure one could if it was used to put enough holes into a tanker.

Israel and Saudi Arabia haven't reached their war crime quotas for the year yet, they need America to help them catch up.

except if a terrorist group were to have committed the attacks what would be the end goal? plus they would use suicide bombers like in the case of the USS Cole in Yemen. They wouldn't use anti-ship missiles to attack four tanker ships with a max of maybe 30-40 people terrorist groups want mass death so an anti-ship missile launched at a cruise ship would do better then an oil tanker.

Unless their goal wasn't to kill as many people but instead to drive up the price of oil by disrupting oil shipments through the Persian gulf. You know, like the last time this happened.

Ah, I love the smell of ignorant Americans in the morning. Not knowing anything about the region and the actors in it, and making their assumptions about it nonetheless with no primary argument but "oraneg mna bad". It's nothing new, but it gets more annoying when it's about your own country.

The type that try to rationalize actions taken by the Islamic Republic as if Iran's being led by Rational Actors (and thus reach the rational conclusion that Iran couldn't have been responsible) and the type that try to pretend Trump gives a fuck what the Republicans or the Democrats in the Congress say.

The tankers are almost definitely Iran's fault, and they will result in absolutely nothing, unless the UN separately decides it was Iran, and a country independent of the US decides this is a casus belli for war. Trump isn't going to start a war with Iran just because Iran did something stupid. Iran's been doing stupid shit of this grade for years now, and he's have invaded a year ago if he actually had an invasion in mind. Bolton may be playing the drums of war, but that's because Iran is under the pretense that it can somehow "Win" with neither fighting nor negotiating -by outliving the sanctions, somehow- and so is trying to test the waters and see if they can trigger the US into declaring war first.

Why would the mullahs want to provoke the US into war? What would they get if they do get their war? And if war is what they want, why attack non-US tankers?

I've dismissed this an Iranian action out of hand due tp John Bolton wanting this shit so damn hard -- and, yes, that Khamenei et al being rational actors, but if there is reason to think of thsm having delusions of grandeur that's leading Iran right to John Bolton's walrus mustache, let's have it.

Yeah, it doesn't really make sense for Iran to knowingly jeopardize it's own trade through the Gulf. But elements within Iran stupidly picking a fight is totally plausible.
