Theory time: it was neither the US nor the Iranian government, it was the IRGC running rampant with no oversight trying to get back at us for declaring them a terror organization.
Because sometimes even national leaders just want to hang out

This isn't to say Iran is or isn't responsible, just that the US accusations are heavily contradictory to first-hand reports.
Eyewitnesses are notoriously unreliable.

I wouldn't call them just eyewitnesses, seeing as how they were the victims of what's at the very least attempted mass-murder. Also, considering it's not just one crew member's report, but multiple reports from multiple crew members, it has way more credibility than Mike Pompeo almost immediately screeching "IRAN DID IT!!1!"

Not really. People wrongly remember normal things they just saw, to say nothing of a chaotic event.

And multiple people independently claiming a similar event happened (who were victims of that event, mind you) don't have more credibility than somebody halfway across the world immediately screaming about who the perpetrator is not even a day after the events unfolded because... why, exactly?

I just fucking told you. People can credit things that happened before or after traumatic events as being causative or related to the event when they aren't. Multiple eyewitnesses can, in fact, reinforce the false perceptions. Seriously. I find them as uncredible as Pompeo.
