I almost wish it was, but with the defence cuts we really are just this inept at protecting trade ships.

We can’t have warships following every British flagged vessel in contested or dangerous waters, no matter how much we spend on defence.

Still we could do a lot better. There should be more than just one destroyer (temporarily two) in an area which the Royal Navy has already marked as 'critical'.

If you can find one of their crappy excuses for a frigate you can send it to the bottom to be sure but that provides little protection to your ships.
Fleet nuclear submarines are not particularly suited for convoy escort against speed boats.

I think there should be a bigger emphasis put on the defence budget; I know that's easier said than done considering that there's many other demands on the national budget though if we can do it in the 80's we should be able to do it today.

But they should not be cutting jobs throughout. Only the Army should see large active force reductions, the RAF and RN should be greatly strengthened.

The British Army has some 80,000 regulars, the RAF and RN only 33,000.

Make each 50,000. By cutting the Army 30,000 you can send 15,000 to the RN and RAF each at no extra cost.

But yes the budget has to be increased.
