Also, I'm not even gonna bother with the Zapatistas. I was partially wrong, it works on a small scale. Putting it on the scale of a large country, however, is like putting Vince Russo in charge of WWE.

They have a larger population than Iceland, in a much more concentrated area and broken up into multiple, confederated communities. It'd work just fine in a large country; there'd simply be many more communities.

I believe it is quite possible that the USSR could have survived into the 21th Century with a few reforms. However I doubt the eastern bloc would have followed suit. There were severe problems present, that had amassed over time.
