Why am I just only learning of this now

Because power is what enables cops to get away with their crimes, and suppressing knowledge of their crimes keeps them in power.

Their crimes are so numerous, and only relatively documented on the Hong Kong subreddit. There are probably many other crimes not heard of from Hong Kong that didn’t reach the internet.

I don’t have screenshots or a link, but there were 2 secondary students raped. I’m sorry I can’t prove it, but some HK subreddit digging should do.

This is why a lot of people in China are insensitive to the police’s crimes, because they aren’t aware of it. If they are aware of such actions, their own actions to prevent that are supressed or are being prevented through constant monitoring.

Today is Halloween in HK. I've just received a text/announcements from MTR authority that they are on "high alert" (because of Halloween) and several stations have been preemptively stopped.

If the protestors start something in the early afternoon, then maybe everyone would get sent home.

Though its a weekday and presumable most of them won't skip school to start some trouble. But its Halloween so who knows (I think it was just yesterday that they launched something at three major HK universities).

We're just planning to go trick or treating before enjoying the festive mood in Lan Kwai Fong together. The real question is whether the police will do something dramatic.

Quick update: Yes, they did, by blocking access to Lan Kwai Fong and macing people who tried to go celebrate Halloween. I did manage to get some candies on my way to Central, though, so I guess that count as the silver lining nowadays. Also found a nice pub near my home as well.

It seems that they also suppressed the vigil outside Prince Edward station as well, but with much heavier force and liberal use of tear gas. I guess having a bunch of foreigners nearby deters their brutality somewhat.

No, but it is a pretty common occurrence in America (and I hear even Canada, the UK, Australia, etc.). Regardless if the area is urban, suburban, or rural. There's a reason ACAB exists as a term.

The PRC isn’t going to “kick” Hong Kong, and frankly they don’t care what the foreign media thinks about them. Whole it’s not head over heels economically ahead of the rest of China as it once was, it’s still a major economic center in Eastern Asia, an to be rid of it would be idiotic, even with all the protests.

Hong Kong accounts for a sizable portion of the PRC's economy, so I'd say there's about as much of a chance of the PRC "kicking them out" as there is of Kim Jong-un transitioning NK to a democracy.

Unfortunate for PRC and fortunate for HK, that is also precisely why PRC couldn't settle the unrest in Hong Kong the same way it did in Uyghurstan and Tibet. At least, not without preparing for a major economic setback, given that most of the foreign capital flowing into China through Hong Kong would be lost for quite a while. Combined with the ongoing trade war, the (rumoured) economic downturn in China and all sorts of internal issues, it would have the potential to be the final nail in Xi's, if not CCP's coffin.

Personally, I feel that some kind of (con)federation solution would be for the best (and might actually be attractive enough for ROC), although that would require a PRC that was/is more open to the idea of not being in control of everything it could, so I guess it was never meant to be.
