Can you elaborate on this? At a glance it seems like there are a lot of parties represented in Japan’s National Diet, but I’m probably missing something due to not knowing much about Japanese politics.
There's a lot of aspects but the LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) has been in almost continuous power since 1955 when it made agreements with other parties to keep itself in power against the rising Japanese socialists. There's an extreme amount of nepotism and bribery within the Japanese government and while I won't go on as to confirm it's existence, it's pretty common belief among Japanese people that a group of influential corporations and politicians hold insider meetings about who to bring to power and who to coerce, in exchange for the LDP granting corporations subsidies and exemptions and provincial leaders investment in their region, which in turn helps them get reelected.
It's actually quite fascinating and you shouldn't just take my word for it. Books like "Japan's Dysfunctional Democracy" by Roger Bowen are what got me into this topic.
