Because we will have defaulted on all of our debts, the nation will have gone bankrupt. Since we couldn't pay for anything beyond the limit, we would have to make severe cuts and print outrageous amounts of money to pay off what debts we have, which would lead to mass unemployment, the destruction of the safety net, and Weimar levels of hyperinflation.

then maybe we shouldn't be so irresponsible with money.

Irresponsible? How are we irresponsible with necessary government funding? All we need to do is raise taxes and we can start paying off our debt, it worked in the 90s and the economy is similar(at least on paper).

Do you have the first idea who countries borrow money from?

slash military spending by 50 percent for starters and we'd still have the largest military in the world

That's not likely to happen, I'm afraid. No nation ever became a superpower by taking actions that cut prestige. Far easier to raise taxes come 2021, we have a better chance of that happening if we win out.

We don't need such a large military. Who cares about prestige? I don't when its a waste of money.

Good god in heaven this is an uninformed position to take lol. The American military would be a joke that couldn't do anything across the world if we did that.

Where do you think the money spent on the military goes?

My point is it's not going anywhere, so we have to do things that we can actually achieve in the next five years. Do you want to raise the debt ceiling or commit global economic genocide?

Bullshit its untrue lol. We're already lagging behind the Chinese on AShM tech and countermeasures, Russian pilots get more flight time than us, we have less combat ready Army units than we did in 2003. To cut the budget by a full 50% you'd have to mothball huge parts of the navy, cancel all current procurement plans, shut down most overseas bases, likely discharge a ton of personnel etc etc. All you would be doing is handing the world to Beijing.

It goes into the paychecks of those who build those ships and planes. To the companies that employ people who supply the raw materials and components that are used to build them. To the miners who dig the raw materials out of the ground.

And then, by extension, to the people working in supermarkets who sell food to those workers. To the builders who build their houses. To the farmers who grow the crops that make the cereal they eat before going to work. Etc. Etc.

Your understanding of economics is hilariously bad.

Why would Russia be in favour of a thing that reduces western dependence on Russian gas export?

Because it would open up all of eastern Europe and the Caucasus to Russian aggression.

They wouldn't, but they would be in favour of the United States cutting off its nose, lips, and ears to spite its face.
