It's all academic since there isn't going to be a US-Iran war any time soon.

Russia has been sided with Syria and Iran since quite a while.

In some aspects it's a return of re-aligned cold-war front lines in the middle east with the US and Russia having local allies and proxies.

Well obviously.

It is a shame that Iran has such terrible relations with the West. They should be hand in hand resisting the Mongol Horde, just as ancient Persia did centuries ago.

Not the most likely war to begin, but......
I doubt Russia would sit this one out, possibly not go for full engagement, but perhaps creating a threshold enough to sweat the US forces into compromise.
As for who would back the US in this, I've got to say they're on their own after pissing on many friendly bridges. Besides, who else would gain from this misadventure?

Geopolitically the US would likely have to put more into the Arabian sea close to Pakistan and the Chinese could see that as a threat to its ambitions at Gwadar. So I could see a 4th player entering the game.

Nothing out of Ordinary, especially for Russo-Iranian relations this last few years. Russia has a recent history of abandoning Iran to the dogs.

No it's the other way around, this is the best support they could give honestly. Outright War would be like Russia helping Serbia by declaring War: It'd embarrass themselves while embarrassing USA too.

And yes, the EU is Germany in this comparison. I threw you a bone 4th-Reich conspiracists be happy. :p

Yes, because the US will face any form of trouble fighting a country that literally lacks a viable air force, who's missiles have a precedent missing targets and falling inside their own borders and who's main navy insists of ships that can't fight in open sea and are essentially limited to the Persian Gulf. Iran has no hope in a military confrontation, and Russia has practically given the US the green light in a punitive measure (which is hilarious, because that's literally what Iran's been hoping on this last two years).

Contrary to popular belief, the Iranian Establishment isn't made of rational actors. It's never been. It specifically wants a confrontation with either Israel, Saudi Arabia, or The US (and attacking either former will result in an attack from the Latter anyway)

I was under the impression that Iran is actually one of those regimes where the leadership does not really buy into its own ideological BS and is discreetly (or not so discreetly) living in comfy villas in privileged neighborhoods and indulging in that sweet, sweet Western decadence. Kinda like the Saudis with their cocaine-fueled sex orgies or the Eastern Bloc leaders cruising around in Mercedes and BMWs. Wrong?

No, their ideology is a mask for their geopolitical ambitions, it's justification. The Iranian Revolution was more a Geopolitical Strategic Shift than the creation of a genuinely ISIS-like state(even if it was at the first), using Theocracy to mask and support their objectives.

Having read a fair number of books and first hand accounts on the matter I do not even know where to begin how detached from reality that is.

This sounds like something fabricated from a abstract think tank or taken straight from a Paradox-style game where a country switches it's ideology to get better stats and boni

Conclusion: Trump should send John Bolton and Mike Pompeo to the Hague for war crimes in Iraq, and this whole nonsense about going to war with Iran should be put to bed. No need for a conflict that would see tens of thousands killed.

Russia doesn't exactly have a vast history of defending Persia. In fact, the opposite is true.

It's unsurprising that they most likely wouldn't get involved if war was to happen. The last thing they want is a direct confrontation with the US.

You're... not really wrong. The problem is, the State's administration itself is pretty ideologically driven, but the "next-generation" of that Administration (so to speak, their children, spouses, close family, et al) do live in comfy villas in privileged neighborhoods and indulge in that sweet, sweet Western decadence. The problem is that within the borders of Iran, the Mullahs (and I don't mean "Mullahs" are the derogatory was normally used by the Neocons. I literally mean the Clergy, which are those de facto with power) do buy into their own ideology. Where Opposition to Israel, the Saudi State, and The US is concerned, their as serious as they sound.

Maybe so.

I think that during the campaign, Trump honestly thought he could mend Russo-American relations. Which in the long run, is a smart thing to do, as it reduces the chances of war, opens Russia's vast resources to Western-funded development, and creates a wedge against the real enemy (China). Trump's own speeches seemed indicate this is something he genuinely believed.

Of course, his actions as president have been completely in the opposite direction. I'm not sure how much of this is because he changed his mind or if other forces influenced him.
