Have We Forgotten What Memorial Day Truly Means?

Postby Imbalistan » Mon May 27, 2019 11:11 am

BBQ's. Mattress sales. Clearances. All parts of Memorial Day weekend to many, but I feel that we forget about the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is meant to honor out fallen veterans, soldiers, and those who have served in the military. But, to me it seems to become commercialized... filth. Well, maybe not filth, but far from the true meaning. We should remember who we are honoring: soldiers.

Thank you our fallen soldiers for protecting the USA.

Memorial day only means hockey for me, as I have no idea what's and why the Memorial Day but I'm happy les Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda won the Memorial Cup and another team from the LHJMQ was runner up!

People didn't put their ass on the line so we could all be miserable and somber, they put their ass on the line so we could have a nice country to live in, and there's nothing disrespectful about enjoying it. Grab a flag and a nice juicy cheeseburger and make a joyful noise onto the Lord, huh?

It's commemorating the Civil War.

No. What a self satisfied and dumb premise.
"...I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season." -MLK Jr.

And no, we haven't I would say. After all, even here overseas, EVERYTHING this last day or so has been blaring about "honoring the fallen" and the like. I've seen more pictures of tombstones on FB within the past 24 hours than I have for the past 3 months an I'm in a few different Halloween and cemeteries groups.

As a veteran I say live it the fuck up. If that means buying a bunch of shit you do that. The day isn’t ment to be a gray gloomy day. Live at little.

Hell I went to a fireworks show and chugged some beers down. It definitely beats the alternative of sitting around getting depressed

Also the poll is bad and you should feel bad

Pretty much this. I’d want people to celebrate not be a bunch of mournful sad sacks. Hell at my eventual funeral I want people to be happy and not sad so there’s gonna be an open bar and fireworks

Honestly if anything bothers me it’s when people decide Memorial Day would be a great day for a fireworks show (I have a couple of neighbors who do this). It’s kinda ironic considering how many retired soldiers (like my dad) have PTSD and fireworks exacerbate it.

Not in any cemetery groups on FB (in fact I just deleted my account last week), but I do find historic and unique headstones to be interesting. My grandma was buried in a cemetery which dates back to the early 20th century, and while we were out there putting flowers on her grave, I decided to go to the back area where most of the old graves are located. It was interesting seeing the number of WWI veterans buried there.

Also if you visit the Find a Grave website, they have a section dedicated to unusual grave markers and famous graves.

It's weird that you're complaining about mattress sales, when Memorial Day is more normally associated with the end of the school year.

And, my neighbors just started the fireworks. I was trying to finish a book but the sound was getting to me so I just gave up and now I have my earbuds in listening to music on my local radio station's website. I'll just finish later. My dad has his earbuds in too and is watching The Andy Griffith Show.

I'd say you Americans have. I find it disgusting that a day that is meant to be dedicated to the memory of fallen servicemen and women has been turned into another commercial extravaganza.

It is a tad disrespectful to host BBQs and mattress sales on Memorial Day. It doesn't feel right.
