I've grown up speaking and writing in American English, though thanks to the internet (and even NSG), I find myself occasionally throwing in British spelling without thinking about it. I'll find myself typing centre, colour, etc etc.

It's horrifying.

I have to admit, I pulled up short the first time I caught myself referring to "taking the trash out", rather than "taking the bins out".

Years later, "trash" still sounds slightly jarring in a British accent.

Australian English tends to drop the "u" from words that rhymes with -ur like Harbour, Labour, Neighbour, etc. So in Australian English it's Harbor, Labor, Neighbor, and the list goes on.

I lived in Australia for six years, and - noting at least one prominent exception - Australia typically uses '-our' endings, not '-or' endings.

So, Sydney Harbour, the long-running Melbourne soap opera Neighbours, and the public holiday of Labour Day.

The primary exception is the second-largest party in the Australian House of Representatives, which has officially been the Australian Labor Party since 1918.

Since I am British, I tend to prefer English to American English. However, I do concede that in some aspects, American English is superior, such as their usage of the words "apartment" and "vacation".

british english is the standard so i reckon american is just american but its a bonus knowing both if you play word games where sometimes a U or a different spelling can come in very handy.

And that's ignoring the sheer idiocy of the logic... languages are meant to change and their "static" character would mean they've fundamentally failed to "preserve" a key aspect of the language. Since, of course, this is a "fact" not a fact, we don't have to worry: any sense of stasis is the result of cherry picking.

It is true that in most parts of the world English speakers are forced to use software with spell checks that default to American English... and often seem very resistant to being changed (thankfully my copy of Word refuses to permanently not be Australian).

Well, no. Languages are meant to communicate, and that’s about it. Whether they change or not is irrelevant to their purpose.
