What gets me is that we're making a big deal over this fairly inconsequential mammal, but few people seem to care about the wide-reaching implications of krill depopulation.

But killing them all in the name stopping ebul nuclear power is good cause reasons...

We have had the technology to address this but we attack the technology that could address the problem rather than the problem.

Feel free.

Meanwhile the adults can think rationally and not lose their minds over an animal that was dependent on a single tiny island.

Another thing to consider: the things were probably so inbred that a genetic disorder could have wiped them all out without any external influence.

Because, clearly, the rational solution to the impending doom of climate change is to dismiss its earliest victims as irrelevant to said impending doom.

Congratulations on missing the big picture.

I'd personally ACCELERATE climate change, as then we can see an interesting scenario. Besides, it's not going to stop. Today, the leftists claim that Climate Change kills mammals. Tomorrow, they'll claim that it causes tornadoes (which I'm actually hoping for ).

This species unwillingly became a bioindicator species against its will by being driven to extinction by climate change, but the rational thing to do is to say, "lol who cares? They lived on a tiny island lmao".

Pretty sure it's not just "the leftists" but you know, almost every single accredited scientist that is in climate and such related fields.

Good to see that even in the face of proof, the climate change deniers still seem intent on sticking their heads in the sand and rationalising it away as all natural. I really hope we don't need to get to the point of Idiocracy-level food shortages before we start stepping up and trying to reverse the change. Starting with that pollution-free power idea, if it's at all feasible.

An animal that could have been saved if conservationists had gotten off their butts sooner and acted back in early 2000, which is when the animal started going extinct.

Probably not, see another linked article upthread pointing out that the species may have gone missing long before the cay flooded. It may not even be extinct; even the OP's linked popular article admits as much.

Torrocca wrote:but the rational thing to do is to say, "lol who cares? They lived on a tiny island lmao".

Living things restricted to tiny ranges are very vulnerable to extinction, period. It's a good reason not to give a shit about it, regardless of concerns about global warming.

Do species ever willingly become bioindicators by going extinct? :P

In all seriousness, global warming ought to lead to more tornadoes, though I assume the poster is teasing.

Do you have any idea how horribly disastrous a real 4 degree rise in global temperatures would be? We're not quite there yet, but it would be so much worse than the current issues. You obviously know nothing about climate change.

I don't mean global temperatures I mean the local weather in your area where you notice it's slightly hotter than usual

So because people make what are often times sardonic remarks this means climate change is complete bullshit?

If we ever want to stop collectively kicking ourselves in the dick as a species, we either need to invest more in space exploration and colonization, or invest more in nuclear energy.

Preferably both.

Honestly, I have a thing for them. Just like I have a thing for the Central Powers of WWI, and I WISH the Central Powers won WWI so that I could make the Storm Girls come to life. In our world, we have Earthquakes and Terrorism. in a Central Powers victory world, Tornadoes/Hurricanes and Freedom would replace their respective entities.

If they won, you likely wouldn’t exist.

I would probably be entirely different, and I can see my equivalent in that universe be an actual Storm Girl. Besides, Jihadism would never exist either. However, Storm Girls MIGHT exist in that alternate universe. That's why I wish the central powers won, so that even if I don't exist, there would still be something for if I DID exist: more Storms. Less quakes.
