While Japan was definitely screwed from the beginning, it still was a long fight with the most epic naval battles in history. And the land warfare was really brutal.

Ever read The Rising Sun by John Tolland? Best book on the Pacific War IMHO.

WWI Eastern Front is fascinating and also unjustly overlooked.

But the naval combat was pretty lackluster in WWI overall.
WWII Pacific War has the best naval combat.

The way the Russians mobilized despite having inferior technology and deployment methods compared with germany, but also being defeated at Tannenburg was also fascinating.

I actually have an old hard copy, dated 1981, before I was born.
It is still in print though, you can definitely get copies still.

I prefer the *Russian Civil War, really intriguing mix of old-fashioned tactics, new technology, professional troops and peasant conscripts. Plus a confusing and chaotic geopolitical situation. Hard to get bored.

If you enjoy political thought as much as I it certainly is.

Though it can be a slog to get through, iirc it's nearly 700 pages which is just a bit shorter than Mein Kampf and that book can be a pain to sit through after a while.
