However, be careful not to you what you believe the country to be, what true patriotism is, or the proper state of institutions, to the point it becomes impossible to love your fellow countrymen.

It's not that I don't love many of you. It's that, when the chips are down, I don't trust you absolutely the way I would someone who puts their country first. Imagine it like being suspicious that a sibling is up to no good. It doesn't mean you don't love them (usually), but you are checking your seat before you sit down and being very careful not to take the suspicious looking pack of gum with one piece sticking out they offer you.

We've interpreted them very poorly throughout our history. Am I to look back at the murder of Native Americans who not only sought peace, but integration with the US as an expression of our values? Is that view patriotism? What about the effective prohibition of black people to vote? Slavery? Segregation? Woodrow Wilson!?

The fact of the matter is that as America is predicated upon independence, it would only make sense for an individual to interpret her values as an independent soul. By this standard, one might say that adhering to traditional interpretations for their own sake rather than because of a genuine attachment to them is far more unamerican.

If you don't agree with how your nation has chosen to interoperate itself throughout it's history, than what truly makes you a patriot?
