That being said, is swimming a good way to reduce belly fat?

I am a big fan of my abs but personally I didnt use swimming to burn the fat. I did a range of crunches, situps and flutter kicks everyday until the mirror showed something I liked.

Aerobic exercise, such as cross country running, is best for reducing fat and lap swimming is aerobic exercise.

According to this, breaststroke/butterfly/backstroke target your core so I think swimming is effective in reducing belly fat.

Yay! Thank you very much. Now I have faith that I will turn things around for my body :)

Always hiked and enjoyed outdoor pursuits, and as a result of now being based in Switzerland the playground of possibilities for this got a lot bigger. Moving slowly into alpinism has shown me what I need to improve and so I've been on a decent calisthenic regime for a wee while now coupled with more aerobic excercise.
Don't give much of a shit about looks etc but the rewards in terms of strength and conditioning have been worth it.

I see a few others mentioning diet and it is certainly on of the keys to further fitness. Cut the amount of carbohydrates you are eating, especially basic ones, and mix it up with better grain variety if you're having bread etc. Don't cut it out carbohydrate entirely as you need some sort of fast fuel to get you through. Keep the diet varied, don't sit there with a regime of 500 eggs and plain chicken all the time, that is going to hurt your gut microbiome and that little ecosystem is more valuable to you than you might realise! I don't use any supplements as the concept baffles me but I know others swear by them.

I enjoy biking, camping, hiking, and backpacking. I go to the gym if the weather is bad. Other than that, I'm not particularly active. I probably do need more exercise.

I used to do weights a lot several years ago; the muscle mass in my upper body that formed as a result of it is still there. Need to get back into it, it was a great way of getting rid of excess energy.

I swim two miles on most days, so about ten miles a week, in conjunction with occasional hiking and weight lifting.

I’d call myself quite physically fit - I mostly do it for the endorphin rushes and my own health, as opposed to for vanity reasons however.

I don't drink soda on account of I'm not a fan of it tbh, but if you just make a concerted effort to cut out the soda, pastries with no nutritional value, etc, and just tell yourself to do this every day, it'll get progressively easier and easier to do.

And cheat days are fine sparingly.

You could start off with baby steps: switch over to sugarless soda and, in terms of food, start trying out lighter alternatives to the biggest culprits. If you like french fries, for example, try stir frying other vegetables. If you're consuming too much fatty meat, get yourself some tofu and some good spices and try that instead. Even pastries have healthier versions of themselves if you seek them out.

Oh wow, this thread was made just in time for me! I’m going on a diet starting Monday since I need to lose weight (about 30-50 lbs is my goal). With all the stress I experienced during this past semester, I really slacked off on eating healthy and working out, so I’m going to spend my summer getting my life back in order.

Personally, I consider myself a very healthy individual relative to others in my age group. My motivations for hitting the gym are quite selfish however and I don't enjoy everything about fitness.

One of them is DOMS. There is nothing worse than DOMS post workout. Recently I was a serious runner in a running competition, which I didnt train for, and the distance was 4k on rough outdoor terrain. Got a time of 24 mins but I walked home afterward like I had a broom up my ass. It didnt go away for a couple days.

Its literally a no pain no gain process, no wonder why people have a "cant be bothered" mentality when it comes to strenuous exercise.

well, in my case i try to do exercise quite actively, to the point that it can be an obsession

I used to have pretty bad dandruff, but it went away after I stopped using any shampoo. I just do a thorough rinse and use conditioner now -- no more dandruff, no more poofy and frizzy hair. Life is good.
But to answer your question, it's probably fine unless you notice your scalp getting irritated.
