The worst case scenario for nuclear waste storage at yucca mountain isn't really anything. If it leaks, the leaks can be fixed and its inside a sealed granite mountain. There's really no way to break that. The problem is that it is impossible to stop emitting co2 from power plants without lots of nuclear. Once that problem is solved, we can switch from nuclear to renewables. It's just a temporary fix, as renewables get cheaper and we get more experience integrating them into the grid, we can switch entirely.
